And just because it’s the best aircraft ever built

My dear father somehow managed to get a number of return LHR-JFK Concorde flights paid for by his former employer in the 90s.

Growing up as a confirmed aviation geek, it is something he never ceased to rub my nose in (as recently as last week) with tales of celebrities, caviar and tiny seats at Mach 2+!

Weirdly, Covid-19 might just have created a situation where SST development is more viable. With smaller numbers of passengers, reduced demand for leisure and collapsing demand for jet fuel in the foreseeable future you could just about make a business case for a limited point to point service between global finance centres.

P.s: guessing you meant 'public'

Funnily enough this was the exact topic of conversation. We were watching something about the QE2 in Dubai and I mentioned that I'd always wanted to sail on her. To which my dad noted that apparently in the late 90s Curnard/BA were offering a deal that for the price of a return Concorde ticket they'd swap the return flight for a first class stateroom on the QE2.

Unfortunately I don't think he could have got that past the bean counters, even in the pre-9/11 glory days of executive travel! I couldn't even get my old boss to go halves for extra legroom on Whizz Air to Bulgaria....

Thought I'd better post these...couple of big wins for RR in the US military market.

The B-52 re-engining is a massive win, on top of the huge order it guarantees 50 years of recurring maintenance work and upgrades, and sends a message to any other buyers of the engines that support and parts will be available for decades.

https://www.flightglobal.com/fixed-wing ... 26.article

As for the V-280, in my mind its the one to beat in the FVL space...production of it (if it wins) could be colossal..again huge orders could come with massive maintenance contracts over decades.

Don't forget the Indianapolis operation was originally Allison Engines, the F-130 came out of RR's collaboration with BMW.

Ultimately though its great for RR in the UK as well, keeps the company competitive with regular revenues coming in, also takes business away from GE and P & W...

With the br710 that f130 is based on was the modification for nimrod. The br series is built RR Deutschland. But the f130 will be solely built in Indianapolis, with Allison engines and f35 lift fan

There is no U.K. content or IP in the Allison engines and this government has done a pretty gd job of totally shafting RR U.K. this past 18 months

Was it ever really here though? For years the 15% UK contribution figure was allowed to be repeated time and time again, when it never stood up to the closest examination. Now people are pretty certain that the built in the UK figure is somewhere between 5-7%. UK owned companies is c15% but that's just been used to cover the MoD in press releases.

Not directly defence related (the IR had 'resilience' featuring big in it, though), but this is a nice shot in the arm, for the continued vitality of a key industry provider - from The Telegraph:
"

Rolls-Royce has won backing from a billionaire French oil dynasty to help fund the development of a new generation of smaller, cheaper nuclear reactors that it is claimed will help Britain achieve its green ambitions and reduce dependence on imported energy.

The Perrodo family, which made its fortune from the private oil company Perenco, is behind BNF Resources UK, one of two investors backing Rolls' Small Modular Reactor (SMR) business.

BNF and the US nuclear giant Exelon Generation are putting a total of £195m into the project in a deal which unlocks a further £210m of taxpayer funding."
Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.
If everyone is thinking the same, then someone is not thinking (attributed to Patton)

Two workers at aerospace start-up Reaction Engines are meticulously threading hundreds of ultra-thin metal tubes beneath a set of small bars.

Once each module is complete, sheets of these tubes are arranged in overlapping spirals to form a system that can cool air from 1,000C to below zero faster than the blink of an eye.

The Oxfordshire-based group is part of a UK-led military project aiming to make hypersonic flight a reality with the development of an unmanned air vehicle capable of flying at Mach 5 — five times the speed of sound, or 3,800mph.

The consortium, which includes aero-engine group Rolls-Royce, the Royal Air Force and the defence research agency DSTL, hopes to fly a demonstrator vehicle as early as the middle of this decade.

“The UK needs to accelerate out of the blocks on this,” said Mark Thomas, chief executive of Reaction Engines. The emphasis of the UK project was to build a “low-cost” and “reusable” hypersonic vehicle that came back ready to fly another mission, he added.

Thomas also sees a role for Reaction Engines’ technology in the recovery of waste heat, “taking waste from a factory or an industrial process, running it through the heat exchanger and extracting more energy”.

The company has the backing of a mix of long-term strategic and financial investors, including BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Boeing, as well as asset management firm Baillie Gifford.

Luke Ward, investment manager at Baillie Gifford, said the “performance and efficiency of almost all engineering systems is limited by successful heat management”.

“By pioneering and proving their technology in one of the most demanding applications out there — hypersonic flight — Reaction Engines has produced an extremely lightweight and high-performance group of heat exchange technologies.”

Thomas is also happy to remain based in the UK, despite the allure of the US market. He insisted: “We are doing very well here so there is no incentive or need for us to jump over to the US. We are very well regarded as a British company that can play in the US market.”
