How can a Tornado Hover over the Isle of Wight. I remember seeing a photo taken in the 1970's over the Isle of white and indeed you could read the hands of big ben. The camera was fitted to a Canberra sadly now out of service.

Re: Panavia Tornado (RAF)
How do you fit the big pod that the boxy brute (Tornado) has no problem carrying onto the much sleeker cigar called Typhoon?
Not easily, but the answer could be in the making:

Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Was from from Canberra PR9 flying at 47,000ft over the IOW. Looking at the design of the vans it was taken later than the 1970s however - possibly ~2006 when the Canberra was taken out of service.

@Wrekin762 It wasn't that picture the one I saw showed more of the bridge and less of the Houses of Parliament. It was also taken at a lower altitude as you could read the writing on the London Bus. It was published in a RAF magazine at the time.

It shouldn't surprise many, it's very much an impressive bit of kit and therefore in high demand. The Armchair Soldier wrote:The PM has just claimed in Parliament that the Tornado's RAPTOR pod accounts for 60% of all surveillance intel against ISIL. Quite impressive if true.
Re: Panavia Tornado (RAF)
Always good to piss off the armourers getting them to do several cRaptor re-roles.

What will happen to the Tornado back seat Navigators when Tornado retires? Will they be retrained to do another task?

Reuters reporting that Germany are considering manufacturing a Tornado successor, possibly to be a Eurofighter project.
http://uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/id ... 0?irpc=932Germany plans to develop new fighter jet to replace Tornado
Sun, Dec 20 17:09 PM GMT
BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany plans to develop a new fighter jet to replace Tornado jets in the long term and it aims to hold initial talks with European partners in 2016 about what features they want in the aircraft, according to a document seen by Reuters on Sunday.
A draft document from the Defence Ministry on 'military aviation strategy' said it was still unclear whether the new jet would be manned or unmanned. It said it was also possible that the jet would be designed for both options and then be flown with or without a pilot depending on the type of deployment.
As it would be a European project, it is likely that one or more European companies would be chosen to develop the jet. The Tornado jet, which Germany has been using since 1981 - although it now also has the newer Eurofighter jet - was also made in an international consortium called Panavia.

Re: Panavia Tornado (RAF)
Who with?
The F35 has effectively neutered the European fast jet industry. UK and Italy are committed to the F35. Spain doesn't have the resources but wants the F35. France seem content with Rafale and upgraded Mirage jets. The other smaller nations seem to be headding to F35 too.
Sounds like they're going to be getting their own gripen variant to me.

It might be an attempt to enter FCAS by any other name.

Perhaps it is.Gabriele wrote:It might be an attempt to enter FCAS by any other name.
It will likley need another strong economy to get the project off the ground any way. Seems like a long time to stretch tornado out.

Read More: http://www.raf.mod.uk/news/archive/raf- ... s-19022016Twenty-five years since the Royal Air Force helped liberate Kuwait from Saddam Hussein’s forces, an RAF Tornado GR4 has been painted in the iconic Gulf War ‘desert pink’ paint scheme to honour the aircraft type’s almost continuous operational service since then.
The ‘desert pink’ Tornado, number ZG750, is based at RAF Lossiemouth with XV(R) Squadron, which saw active service during Operation Granby, the UK’s codename for the Gulf War. The aircraft carries 11 ‘battle honours’ on its tail, recalling the Tornado’s almost continuous service on operations worldwide since 1991.
Re: Panavia Tornado (RAF)
Oh that's cracking. Like the scheme, the list of ops on the tail just shows how active the fleet has been.

Re: Panavia Tornado (RAF)
Anyone know which squadron will disband in 2018 when the first F35 squadron arrives at Marham? If im right the other two squadrons will remain until march 2019 (by that time the two new Typhoon tranche 1 squadrons should of stood up)
