The first of Britain’s new fleet of nine maritime patrol aircraft has taken to the skies. The flight of the Poseidon MRA Mk1 was completed successfully at the hands of Boeing test pilots.
Following this first test flight the aircraft, serial ZP801, will now be fitted out with the Poseidon-specific military systems. The aircraft is scheduled to be delivered to the Royal Air Force, initially at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, in October 2019 and is due to arrive in the UK in early-Spring 2020.

UK & Norway Reinforce Commitment for Joint ASW Ops in North Atlantic

Defence Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan hosted Norwegian State Secretary Tone Skogen to discuss NATO and the UK’s role in the North Atlantic.
The UK is investing £3 billion in nine new Boeing Poseidon P-8A maritime patrol aircraft (MPA), with Norway committing to a further five. The aircraft are sophisticated submarine-hunters designed to scout complex undersea threats.
The aircraft will work together, and with NATO allies, to combat a range of intensifying threats in the North Atlantic, including increased hostile submarine activity.
Hopefully NSM/JSM gets integrated on the P-8 one day

Well its obvious now why the industrial support packages for platforms cost so much. Every time they have to build a whole new set of infrastructure on a station regardless of how old the existing one is. Those contractors must be delicate souls

Is there some sort of competition to see how small they can make the "Royal Air force" stencil on the side? So tiny they might have allied aircraft colliding just trying to identify whose P-8 it is!...Jdam wrote:

I guess we are getting Harpoon.The aircraft will also be armed with Harpoon anti-surface ship missiles and Mk 54 torpedoes capable of attacking both surface and sub-surface targets.

The lad I know is RAF & he's been in Florida for months now. Thx, sounds like good news.
It was alright to say that an SSN is the most potent ASW weapon and as at the time there was no knowing where the ASW would need doing, then easy and quick deployment was another bonus.

Would be nice, but sounds either too good to be true (with additional funds made available to acquire them) or a bit crap if it means cuts elsewhere to fund them. Either way, why wait until after the GE to announce it?Tinman wrote:We will be getting a further buy of 8, announced after the election.

An extra 8 harpoon missiles.. sorry had to! Seriously it would be good if it does happen ! I think maybe in the long term with the resurgence of the submarine threat and the optional added land radar capability.
