Re: Foxhound Protected Vehicle
I think that's a reasonable option.
The foxhounds are well regarded within the army I believe, so why not continue with that.

It would be nice if the price was right they are a bit costly at the moment.

It has my vote - not that my opinion counts for much that is. Sensible solution to my mind all the same though. Promotes commonality, we already have operational familiarity with them and should reduce costs as a result of a simplified supply chain and streamlined induction/integration. It also has the added benefit of being a MOTS solution that was originally designed in reply to a UK specific requirement in the first place. Seems to be the best of both worlds. The only issue is that they are indeed quite pricey...arfah wrote:http://www.janes.com/article/54694/dsei ... -for-mrv-p
General Dynamics UK hoping to flog another 600 Foxhounds to uk plus 78 ambulance versions.
Also possible 6x6 configuration
Also, minor point but the way i read it, the article seems to state that GD intends to offer the Eagle V in a 6x6 configuration - not the Ocelot. Seems that if there is an insistent requirement then GD will have to design a 6x6 Ocelot variant from scratch?

I believe it states a mix of vehicles , including both 4x4 and 6x6 versions of the Eagle Vs as one option . I agree it seems Strange they didn't include the 6x6 ocelot in the second option . But maybe it's not part of the off the self solution as they see it , and maybe the price reflects that , so as you said maybe it's classed as a brand new vehicle which would have to be scratch built .
from JANEs article quote !
ropose two options, or potentially a mix of vehicle types. One option would be for a fleet of General Dynamics European Land Systems Mowag Eagle Vs in the 4x4 and 6x6 configurations. Another option would be the General Dynamics Land Systems UK (previously Force Protection) Ocelot 4x4.

Which makes it the correct choice! We need more commonality to squeeze the most out of tight budget's, efficiency savings blah blah, especially with army vehicles, the fragmented arrangement pains me!~UNiOnJaCk~ wrote: Promotes commonality
Either that or sell off the existing vehicles and start fresh but that seems silly to loose all the knolage gained thus far.

Looking at BBC News24 just now. Bomb attack in Kabul. Looks like a Foxhound got hit. Seems amazingly intact though. Definitely money well spent on each vehicle. Fingers crossed the guys inside are alright.

Yes. Remarkably "intact." That minor scrape on the front drivers side should easily buff out.

Re: Foxhound Protected Vehicle
I personally wonder about the Foxhound's salvagable content. It's basically a giant armoured module on the back of an engine and it looks like the engine took the brunt of it.
Could whip the module off that and plonk it on another engine housing, one might wonder.
Great to see this fantastic vehicle proving itself. Somehow the hit managed to make it look even more of a hard little thing than it already did. Bravo Foxhound engineers!

Re: Foxhound Protected Vehicle
Was wondering about that myself. Dread to think at all the potential unseen damage and structural weakness potentially caused though...RetroSicotte wrote:I personally wonder about the Foxhound's salvagable content. Plus dark glasses and he's carrying his rifle left handed! Gotta be a yank surely?
Re: Foxhound Protected Vehicle
Ok remarkably intact was the wrong phrase. It was pictured on the news report for about 10 seconds when first aired.
Thankfully everyone is ok. Amazing machine. Exactly what the Army needs & the politicians shouldn't be fannying around debating whether to buy more.

Re: Foxhound Protected Vehicle
For half price you now get 10 dismounts in the back, all-round camera view, blast & splinter protection as well as the vehicle being amphibious. Indeed, two of these are in the UK right now for Nato std blast testing:The Armchair Soldier wrote:Here's another pic from Sky News:

Re: Foxhound Protected Vehicle
interesting point:
- tracked it is, then. Turns on its own length
- BTR90, though, turns on an extra 10-20 % added
