"Tompions" are/were fitted to the muzzles of Naval Guns, to keep corrosion (from salt water) at bay. They became quite elaborate, often emblazoned with the ship's crest. Imagine the gun crews having to remove and secure eight or more of these before and after a battle. Little different from what is done with the Mushrooms really!

I don't know why everyone is getting excited by this. The mushrooms are frangible as can be clearly seen is these tests. One of the advantages of the Sea Ceptor system with the mushrooms is its ability to operate in the most extreme environments such as the South Atlantic for example were the risk of severe icing is high.

Well those bits flying about seen pretty flat to me rather than pieces of rounded "Mushroom", so could be the caps we saw in earlier posts, but then again maybe not.

Look carefully. Mushroom is NOT THERE from the canister CAMM is coming out.

I finally found the photo of HMS Argyll, the photo taken on 3/3 this year at Malta. All mushroom caps have been taken off.

In your video the debris you can see (small black triangles) come from the frangible tops of the launch tubes. Not the mushrooms, In all the videos I've seen the Mushrooms are always removed before launch. Which makes sense as they appear to be their to provide additional protection from the elements to the missiles/launch tube. To do its job effectively it will need to be extremely robust so its highly unlikely a missile could be launched through it.
In war their is always the possibility of coming under attack with little warning. If the weather is fine no problem, remove the mushrooms and you are immediately ready to respond. However if the weather is bad do you fit the mushrooms to protect the missiles and risk the ship, or do you leave all or some of the missiles without mushrooms in order to be able to respond immediately. Risking them going unserviceable and not being able to respond anyway.
Or do you do the sensible thing and fit robust hatches which open immediately prior to launch and close immediately after? It is after all what all other VLS seem to do. Ok it may cost a few pounds more but that does not seem to me to be a good reason for not doing it.

How about covering the CAMM bay with one single retractable rolling door instead?

Iranian boats 'tried to intercept British tanker'
Iranian boats tried to impede a British oil tanker near the Gulf - before being driven off by a Royal Navy ship, the Ministry of Defence has said.

HMS Montrose, a British frigate shadowing the tanker British Heritage, was forced to move between the three boats and the tanker, a spokesman said.

He described the Iranians' actions as "contrary to international law".

Iran had threatened to retaliate for the seizure of one of its own tankers, but denied any attempted seizure.

Boats believed to belong to Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) approached British Heritage and tried to bring it to a halt as it was moving out of the Gulf into the Strait of Hormuz.

Guns on HMS Montrose were trained on the Iranian boats as they were ordered to back off, US media reported. The boats heeded the warning and no shots were fired.

I was in Malta at the end of May and Echo was in Valletta, we chatted with some of the crew in 'The Pub' (where Oliver Reed met his demise) and they had FOST onboard , who funny ol thing were propping up the opposite end of the bar ! They said they were assisting with the EU anti migrant Op at the time so I assume that the Echo that did the Grace 1 job was her. Nice to see an RN presence in the Med - a very versatile little ship.

Why the Artisan 3D radar be inclined in the beginning of the movie?
It resumes normal position later in the movie...

Another angle of HMS Kent.

(ships, planes and gaming) 12th July 2019

0:22 - 0:50 ^ Artisan is a 3D radar that can pivot. It may be 'saluting' the Round Tower.

Indeed, its taken an age from MSI's Seahawk SIGMA. Doesn't look like it can take 7 missiles like the original SIGMA but finally some sense.

Now we just need to put it on every DS30M mount....and add Starstreak.....and add some radar panels....and turn it into a CIWS...

Next up....Chemring Centurion please...

No need for Starstreak, LLM has a surface to air capability.

you are right no need for Starstreak on the T-23 , T-45, T-31 however on the Rivers could be a better for anti air as it is a Mach 4 missile capable of engaging fast and hard moving targets

LMM top speed is m1.5 with a range of 6.5km
Starstreak top speed c. M4 with a range of 8km.

Thats a massive difference in engagement envelope. We've got both so why not use them. We'll probably have more Starstreak in stock than LMM.

So double the cost for a 20% increase in range. Is that really worth is for a patrol vessel?

It's not just it's range though. Far more important is its speed if we're thinking about the range of threats that it's going to be effective against.

Why does a patrol vessel need a mach 4 missile?
