No idea why they are there but last year I saw some workmen doing some paintwork on the QE and they were using one.Timmymagic wrote:Whats the purpose of the identical pontoons moored on QE's and PoW's port sides?
Indeed, smaller boat getting some juice from it's bigger ship!Timmymagic wrote:Whats the purpose of the identical pontoons moored on QE's and PoW's port sides? Are they for refuelling operations from the Serco fuel barges?
Apparently those crappy built yankee boats leak while the British quality ones don'tTimmymagic wrote:Have we ever thought of using a boom like the USN uses around its docked carriers at Norfolk?
Only one thumbs up? That was wit worthy of Shakespeare, was going to be my entry for comment of the year (shakes head)Ron5 wrote:The last we heard was that the PoW drones on keeping the neighbors awake.

Not the same thing I'm afraid. In the pictures with the Magpie is the Serco Fuel Barge Ocean Spray, and she's quite a deal bigger (and covered with pipework and shelters). She's towed into position by a tug after filling up at Gosport to top the tanks off on the carriers. The ones attached in the photo's appear to be basic pontoons. Weirdly they're moored where there is no access to the vessel, either via a door or one of the boat bays above. No work seems to be underway from them either so no idea what purpose they serve.PhillyJ wrote:Indeed, smaller boat getting some juice from it's bigger ship!
Whatever it is they're doing it appears to be something that needs to be done to both ships.bobp wrote:No idea why they are there but last year I saw some workmen doing some paintwork on the QE and they were using one.

does that mean she has three, or that some have needed replacing?hovematlot wrote:Apparently, POW is being fitted with her 3rd Phalanx this week...
She only has 2 at the moment and the third is being put on this week as early mentioned, before QNLZ for which my lad has just laughed and said 'well we are the more important one'. He is home on 3 weeks leave at the moment.jedibeeftrix wrote:does that mean she has three, or that some have needed replacing?hovematlot wrote:Apparently, POW is being fitted with her 3rd Phalanx this week...
Well, straight from newly promoted AB1 Johnno's mouth, he said that they are there for lots of reasons. When the fuel ship comes alongside they are used to help in the process to get whatever is needed on board, and for various 'dabbing' jobs when required at the water line.bobp wrote:No idea why they are there but last year I saw some workmen doing some paintwork on the QE and they were using one.Timmymagic wrote:Whats the purpose of the identical pontoons moored on QE's and PoW's port sides?
