The simple fact that a British lead CSG is in the Pacific will have the attention of China and it will bluster away all day long we have already stated our intention by sending a Carrier to that part of the world on its first deployment and just by the fact it is there is enough. For me the way forward is to send a type 23 as part of escort group on a 12 mile FON detachment in the SCS

Interesting choice of words. By sailing in any waters claimed by China you are by default being confrontational. I don't think anyone expected the Carrier Group to sail a few miles of one of the artificial islands built by China but they seem to have acted in a way far more conservatively, studiously avoiding any waters that China lay claim to, even a very small 10 mile stretch.

What he's likely referring to is it was made clear they wouldn't pass through the Taiwan Strait before the CSG even deployed.

Sailing in the SCS will get some complaints from the PRC but transiting the Taiwan Strait is what gets you a mock PLAAF/PLAN strike coming in. Both are confrontational but both are very different in terms of scale, it's not an 'on-off' thing.

I don't think that is true when you look at how much China claims

They aren't going within 12 miles of any disputed island, or even close to that it is true, but I think they are going through that disputed area. Though I am not sure, and I doubt many others outside the 2 navies and governments are either

They don't really have sufficient resources to compete with China. One of the best things that the West could do to bolster them is to move manufacturing from China to other countries in the region. They will still make the savings they seek, but will be putting money into their economies, rather than the Chinese economy

You have Japan, South Korea, certainly making sizable naval platforms Singapore has also invested heavily in its defence .
Indonesia is seemingly starting to develop but has appeared ad hoc in its defence purchases, though I believe one thing that would go a long way is for South Korea and Japan to finally settle some differences over Japans conduct in the second world war if these two countries were able to be part of joint exercises more often as they were in Talisman Sabre back in July Beijing would take notice

A bit off topic but the US lost cred when they walked out on the Kurd's these smaller players will patrol there waters as they see them but wont poke China out side this

The shame is we'll never know how well we were doing our job - 3 detected, but how many were there? 3 or more?

They have 12 so three to this task is about it as they will need 2 for the 2 carrier groups and working the rule of 3 with 3 on station 3 working up/ training and 3 in maintenance

A mistake to admit that the Chinese were detected. Far better to give the Chinese false peace of mind and not to give away our detection capabilities. They will now be adapting their tech and tactics accordingly. Let's hope we had them pinged at far greater range than we have admitted in public.

In a matter of days this has changed with two USN carrier strike groups deploying to the region in the last few days so along with CSG21 this would make 3 carrier strike groups in the Western Pacific . However as said the UK has made its statement just by having a carrier strike group in the Pacific it dose not need sail within 12 miles of China or any disputed islands it just needs to go about its business working with allied partners
