Given the direction of the Future Commando Force, I think the role of a large LPH / LHD is limited. Also, I am torn about using PWLS in such a role - I used to be against it, but given A2AD then this isn't a reality anyway, so basing for example Chinooks on PWLS and lily padding LPD / RFAs / STUFTs seems a reasonable solution.

Much more likely that the RMs will be based on a larger number of smaller vessels with a hanger for 3-4 helicopters than a new Ocean.

Where the gap is is have the redundancy to have a escort carrier capable of operating CAP / AEW / ASW manned and unmanned aircraft and helicopters IMO.

China will spin the Queen Elizabeth Carrier Groups avoidance of disputed waters as being a result of them being warned to do so by China, showing the Chinese people the strength of China over a major western power. It will also do little to enhance the prestige of the UK as a "Global Power", for good! It is all well and good showing the flag and talking the talk but you have to have the spine to be willing to walk the walk or you might as well not bother and you end up with a very expansive trade cruise.

Not impressed I must admit.
So with QE entering waters claimed by the Chinese for a 2nd time in the last few days, and HMS Richmond having made a transit through the straits of Taiwan, are you now more impressed?

The second video appears to be of an earlier event.

The Australian company that made the MES must rub its hands in glee with each test....getting it back aboard, recertified and prepped for use again must have cost a pretty penny....

Mind you at least they don't have to get the divers out to retrieve the doors on these tests...

Interesting comparing the wakes of the ships the Izumo class appears to create a lot of disturbance in its wake compared to the Q.E class ,is this something detectable?

The speculation is she's running her Prairie/Masker system.

Surprising how minimal QEs wake is compared with the other vessels present, I'm sure this should tell us something , not sure what though!
Interesting to see the landing of an Osprey on QE, looked rather hairy to me.

I thought to include some earlier articles pertaining to the design of the ship and some of the advantages of the ramp as some of the newer members may not be aware e.g. increased take offloads and safety particularly heavy sea states

This article provides a countering viewpoint on the limits of short-range aircraft in the Pacific

There have been a few people online (who would know) who have said as much. The below image of the Ise with the CSG pretty much confirms it. US CVN's don't have the full Prairie/Masker set up, just the Prairie part (the prop part). It appears Ise has both.

To my knowledge, they have never been fitted to Queen Elizabeth, unsure about Prince of Wales. If fitted with the LMM launcher they would be a very useful addition, with four providing plenty of overlap. It still bothers me, though, that Phalanx is not long-ranged enough to stop a large supersonic missile in time.

I am wondering if the fitting of 30mms were cancelled, and instead it was decided to wait until the 40mm is in service.

We'd be seeing an order going in for them, which we haven't, and the order has been placed for the Bofors 40mm and 57mm already. They're not really a stock item so if you want them you have to order years in advance.

Which makes the non-fitment of the DS30M mounts even more perplexing...as they have been ordered, delivered and paid for. They were ordered at the same time as the guns for the River Batch 2's...persumably they're in a RN warehouse in Portsmouth right now covered with shrink wrap...

The only reason I can think for not fitting them is the RN wanting to fit them elsewhere, which I think is unlikely (replace the earlier DS30's on River Batch 1's or T45's?). Or more likely it's because the crew needed for the QE Class has risen and they're trying to minimise the number of personnel needed onboard.

Either way there are currently 8 DS30M sat around unused somewhere...
