Do they keep one flying or just on deck ready to go?Dahedd wrote:At about 3.30 mins in is the Merlin landing or on plane guard?
Awfully expensive chopper for that. Maybe should have kept some Lynx for that.

Maybe a wildcat would be better suited as a dedicated plane guard.....would also be better to have the Merlin HM2's doing their ASW role ?
Or is it a Merlin an HC4 ? is there not a flight for pilot rescue from behind enemy lines if an aircraft goes down ...or have i got my wires crossed ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Not sure the RN uses a plane guard, they certainly have never had a helicopter dedicated to the task since the introduction of the Invincible's. They may have had a Merlin on standby but it would not have been worth having one airborne their was simply no need. I cant see the need on the QEs either. You simply don't get the accidents that were common in the past.
Incidentally just read Harrier 809. Not a bad book with some new (to me at least) information about the Falklands War. One tit bit Harrier did employ SRVL on at least one occasion, so its not new. In the video above their is a shot of F35B conducting a SRVL so presumable the testing proved successful and its been cleared for use.

SRVL still isn't cleared for use. For some reason the film above edits in footage of the trials in October 2018.whitelancer wrote:In the video above their is a shot of F35B conducting a SRVL so presumable the testing proved successful and its been cleared for use.
Don't trust anything on YouTube unless you're certain of its provenance.

Should have realised with BF 04 on the tail.
It does beg the question, what is happening about SRVL?

Trials with PoW, on a WESTLANT deployment then, unless the Trials aircraft, personnel and equipment can cross to this side of “the pond”. But for Covid and PoW incident/repairs, it would possibly have been on WESTLANT21,

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
If I remember back to CVS days there's no dedicated 'plane guard' cab. Rather there were usually enough cabs airborne or on alert to suffice. When there was just fixed wing flying a Sea King (HAS 5/6 or HC4) was on standby ready on deck. During flying stations there was also a crash boat (Pacific RIB) and crew closed up, which honestly for accidents on launch or recovery could probably get to ditched aircrew as quick as a helicopter.serge750 wrote:Maybe a wildcat would be better suited as a dedicated plane guard.....would also be better to have the Merlin HM2's doing their ASW role ?

As for using Wildcat yes you could. But far more space in back of a Merlin for diver, winchman plus rescued crew.

PWLS has indeed got her PompeyRevs on, nipper might pop down and see her come in as it's not a view he normally gets!
He is not sure when, but towards end of this week was suggested and HT seems to be around 1600-1700, Unless they sneak in under the cover of darkness in the early morning of course.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I can't understand why this happened?
"..while ashore in Cyprus". Coming ashore in the days of pandemic, for a navy personnel ? Really? Really?
In the days of peak of Delta in Cyprus? (ref; https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-ea ... 021-07-13/)
In the next post, Navylookout informed us that; All personnel on the deployment were double jabbed before sailing.
But, still not understandable. Vaccine will "decrease" the infection, not stop it. It shall be well known...
Or, it might be as such that, persons with vaccini will not get bad significantly? Even in that case, ALL task force crews will be then prohibited to go ashore later on anyway, because it is the day of pandemic... Sooner or later.
If I'm misinformed, happy to be corrected...

The knocking shops of Nicosia had a clap pandemic when we were there on ops. The MP's were crawling all over town trying to police it but didn't stop several cases in our unit. Good luck trying to stop an airborne contagion!

PoW returned home 16:30 local time, watch it here live on HMS Warrior's Youtube channel:
(NOTE: The camera stream only records the last 12hrs and continually recycles itself.)

That article regarding PTB's is odd as I have seen them on PWLS and nipper was on one when transferring off for his course. I guess they've been shared between the 2 QE class up to now.
