Also worth pointing out that TdC has one of the largest Marine Conservation zones in the World (over 750,000 sq km) and a UNESCO World Heritage site covering several of the islands in the Archipelego, so there's a possibility of doing a little fishery protection and nature conservation stuff along the way - all good for RN image (and retention as well). I suspect these little ships could be a popular posting if they keep doing this sort of feel-good stuff

Impressive, new way of boarding a ship. I still cannot believe this is real RN trial. Hope it works well and used in reality. May be "lack of wildcat hangar" on these OPV will be almost compensated, if coupled with some Camcopter/Hero-level UAVs.

I have to say I am rather impressed, it seems easy to use and control and much quieter than I thought it would be. As for weapons, one was carried all be it only a pistol, I see no reason they cant come up with an arrangement to allow something more effective to be carried. Given how the system works their doesn't seem to be any way for one to be used in flight, but if you look at the alternatives, fast roping from a helicopter or climbing a ladder up the side of the vessel,(note the poor sod climbing up a rope ladder from the Rib), they all need others to provide covering fire if that is necessary.
All in all it seems a useful capability to have even when a helicopter is available. The interesting question is what other uses could it be put to, or will it remain very much a niche capability.

Another point is, how long it will take to train RM soldiers to be a good operator (or pilot) of the system. I understand now the specialist team (not RM persons) is doing it.

They also starved [redacted].

Is France going to cut off electricity? No. The French fisheries minister is playing to her home audience. French fishermen. It won't happen.

Could French fishermen try and mount a blockade? Possibly. Do they have a legitimate grievance? Not sure.

Have British fishermen been screwed over by Brexit? Absolutely.

Lets really go all in and have the Queen Elizabeth Carrier Group cruise around the islands using the French as training targets.

As said the EU should keep its own house in order it to signed the Bexit deal and there for should enforce the rule of law that came with it. If it fails to do so it has no right to point at China and others. Also as said before it should be as easy as reporting fishing boats who brake the law to there country and they should fined and banned from fishing for 6 weeks for the first offence.

This being said if the RN has to enforce the law against French fishing boats it should make them go to Scotland to off load there catch without pay the time and money this would cost a fishing boat

Just comment from the other side of the world.

The issue is highly political. And, being political, having many "cards" in your hand is important.

Nice to see River OPV finding their place. An 80-90m hull with very light armament really fits well into this case. Bad that RN have nothing smaller than OPVs, other than Archer class (too small). Can BF cutter join this game?

Note that France has many small patrol boats. But, the next card France has is A69-class? It is now named as OPV, but its big gun might be "too fighty" looking.

We could always get our Friends to lend us “New Jersey”. It’s 16” guns are capable of reaching France from Jersey Waters. I think any notion of cutting electricity supplies or not complying with regulations would disappear instantly!

Lots of positives here for both the RB1's and the RB2's.

- Large Hulls to intimidate and make presence felt but lightly armed so not too aggressive.

- Decent top speed so can react reasonably quickly

- Lots of RHIBs could be operated from either/both vessels with amble space for EMF if widespread boarding of fishing vessels becomes necessary.

- Tamar's dazzle completed just in time :D

All in all, the River class are perfect for this type of EEZ protection operation.
Note that France has many small patrol boats. But, the next card France has is A69-class?
What can the Maritime Gendarmerie / Marine National actually do regardless of which vessel they send? Not much apart from getting shown the door by RN.

IMO this is a massive diplomatic blunder by the French Govt.
