Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
So Canada and Australia going for the T26 can benefit them by reducing the risk but how is this benefiting the RN ? If the licence is given away the vessels are built in each country, I am not seeing how it benefits us Apart from the other reasons already mentioned think long term. Mid-life upgrade...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I think it was on here a few days ago that someone mentioned their fix feelings towards amateur photographers with drones getting too close to QE, well it's been reported in The Inverness Courier that a photographer landed his drone on the ship while she was being docked at Invergordon the other da...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft General Discussion
Certainly an X47-B would need arresting cables ,but which is more cost effective, rebuilding the carriers to accommodate future aircraft or building aircraft to suit the carriers ? Given the ongoing downgrading of the MQ-25 to an AAR platform with potential to be made into an ISTAR platform at a la...

Hows about that then, US visitor to HMS Eagle 1969, courtesy of Facetube. There's a picture somewhere of a US F-4 that landed on Eagle or Ark when it was unable to land on the accompanying US carrier. It then couldn't be flown off as the carrier was entering Malta, where at the time there was some ...

Some nice drone footage of HMS Queen Elizabeth when she was at Scapa Flow: It's really good footage, no doubt about it. But I have to say that whenever I see drone footage like this my first thought is what colossal berk thinks flying a drone around a warship is really a good idea in this day and a...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Amazing picture of QE in that task group and she looks just as big as the American carrier. But what really struck me was the difference in the greys used by both navies, the RN ships look positively white compared to the American ships. I wonder if anyone can tell us why there is such a big differ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
The next bit is speculation I suspect 2 reasons that they have changed to come to Portsmouth earlier are: 1) Being told that its a tricky transit through the gap at Rosyth basin and experiencing it are different matters 2) Although still an ACA vessel, she is under the command of an RN commodore/ca...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I have not seen any mention of handover at Portsmouth, just that she is sailing into Portsmouth. Perhaps the sea trials are still continuing but with a homeport visit added to the mix. This way if there are any issues that crop up and the handover is delayed it will not be as big an issue for the p...

So, contractor sea trials aced ahead of expected times, despite the more than two weeks in Invergordon...? Early talk had been of 5 weeks + 1 week Invergordon + 5 weeks before entry into Portsmouth. The new date means this phase of trials will be significantly shorter. I know the schedule (as we un...

Re: New Zealand Defence Force
I really think the only solution for NZ is A400M, but can they get them in their desired timeframe is another problem all together When you look at cargo carried and range the A-400 or C-17 were the only sensible answers. The smart move would have been a shared C-17 and C-130 fleet with Australia. ...

They should be reading TD's back-dated issues and buy A-400Ms for both transport and Maritime Surveillance cum SAR roles. Convertible between the two (or at least from the latter to the former role). I'm actually surprised Bangladesh got in there on the 2 x C-130J's let go recently ahead of the Kiw...
