Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

I wonder what's wrong with the latest Abrams... just drop a diesel into it? At least would not need to play catch-up with getting a state of the art penetrator round for it (the current Parliament might even accept DU if someone carefully explained what needs to be achieved with it)? The Italian JV ...

Re: Ocean Class Helicopter Carrier (LPH) (RN)

If you get it right, never miss an opportunity to gold plate it (aus.com news site): ""That hasn’t stopped the Abbott Government examining the $13 billion idea to turn our newest troop-carrying warships into aircraft carriers. But a review of the proposal to buy F-35B “jump jets” for our t...

Re: 16 Air Assault Brigade

Just-me, blocks? I can only see the rotary dials, presumably for windage and elevation (ballistic drop) adjustment. And you can actually use them with gloves on, maybe I have only used cheat hunting sides, but the dials tend to be so small that you have to take the glove off. - for the spray&pra...

Re: Introduction Thread

Ahh, only now spotted this thread. Brought my call sign over from TD. Got involved there when the previous SDSR looked like a fantastic way of wasting money (and capability), rather than actually making savings. Ex Marine recce (hasten to say, a long time ago and not USMC) and thereby interested in ...

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)

A good question, as Pinzgauer was/is about the largest vehicle that can be airdropped, using the platform that goes together with the Hercs. I hope to be corrected, but there is no such platform (yet?)for A400Ms? Dropping artilery to support the first wave of light forces was a focal point for a joi...

Re: General Election 2015 thread

Triple lock when kit and its maintenance is approaching a peak of 48% of the total spending before Trident's real expenditure starting to flow... just shows how each service is trying to get the bare essentials before they will be crushed (postponed) under the weight of that strategic programme &quo...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

Agreed, and while the difference between the two concepts normally is about economics, we can bring in the doctrine as well (economy of force; the Army chose to use c. 5bn on AHs having weighed the relative merits of the two platforms). ...Ahh, using the back arrow seems to be dangerous on this plat...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

Quite agree with Ch2 being OK for a while. The 3 remaining heavy bdes are mechanised, not tank, in their nature and quite rightly focus on combined arms operations. Btw, the all mighty Leo is lacking behind in penetrator development, and even when a new one will arrive (2017?), only the Mk 7s can ta...

Re: RUSI: The U.K. Should expect more instability

In this list, only the last item is a grave error, even though there is always the last straw that breaks the camel's back, however minor that "straw" might be: "However, diplomatically he has played a relatively minor role in the P5+1 in talks with Iran, he has let the French and Ger...

Re: Apache Attack Helicopter (Army Air Corps)

Now that we save some by reducing the numbers, and some more through remanufacture (not decided yet), here is a good way to use the extra dime: http://breakingdefense.com/2015/05/grey-eagle-apache-run-shows-techs-not-enough-to-use-drones-ya-gotta-have-doctrine/?utm_source=Breaking+Defense&utm_ca...

Re: France confirms sale of 24 Rafale fighter jets to Qatar

OK, Rafale is doing what everyone should have been doing, but luckily the other two fighters from Europe are not far behind with Meteor/ AESA combo... the gold standard for BVR, as for detection and reaching out to touch?
