Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
...still lots of talk of expanding the use of 57mm and 30mm+martlet - ignoring the fact we're shortly going to have 10x 40mm units in service on Frigates. if there is any serious suggestion that 40mm is open to question, then fine. in the absence of that suggestion i'd suggest that talk of expandin...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
In 1983 Hermes airwing was 32 aircraft carried 22 Harriers and 10 SeaKing so with 15 F-35's QE will at some point need to carry 17+ helicopters to beat that I don't suppose it is a coincidence that 21 aircraft is more than the Invincible class could carry and so it is a symbolic milestone for the R...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
By the way, how about 8 T26: 1x 127mm, 24x strike-length VLS (mk41), 48x CAMM, 2x 40mm 3P (banning 2x 30mm and 2x CIWS) 5 T31: 1x 57mm, 12x CAMM, 2x 30mm, 2x CIWS (banning 2x 40mm 3P) In T26, 48 CAMM and two 40mm 3P will cover high-end and very-low end (drones?) AAW, respectively. In T31, 12 CAMM f...

Firstly right now it is making what we have work better and then adding where and when needed next FFGX is in another league to type 31 and more on a par with type-26 in its weapon fit. If Type 31 was to be fitted as I put forward i.e 1 x 57mm , 3 x 30mm , 1 x Phalanx , 30 x CAMM , 8 x NSM + soft ki...

If we take the T31 at a £450m baseline how much will adding these weapons and systems cost? Where are you getting a 450 million baseline from? As for cost of adding weapons NSM cost would come from the said 200 million outlined , Phalanx would be the cost of the interface as the main gun system is ...

When it comes to type 31 being as capable as a type 23 GP... A few points to consider regarding the high north. 1. If NATO now wants increased surface patrols in the high north, that will require extra assets to perform such patrols unless other taskings are being reduced elsewhere. RN have current...

Re: Future Solid Support Ship
With a realistic overall programme budget from the start! I would say that a RFI should be put together and issued with no budget it should be for companies to come up with package and program cost that is not to say the MOD should not have realistic figure in mind when setting out the RFI. Also wh...

With this statement HMG is setting out its stall that it wants to operate in the High North and the Indo-Pacific if this is their intention they will need more Type 31's to allow a more active flow Agreed but they need to be as capable as HMS Sutherland. This not a deployment for a flag waving gunb...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
For me I can almost understand the thinking that type 45 and 23 don't need Anti-ship missiles as they are with the carrier which would deal with OTH strike. However for me any singleton should have a SSGW capability. The whole Type 31 program has been poor in its thinking from the start it should ha...

Two things for me one HMG keep bring up the EU rule about non warship builds when telling us we are not in the EU anymore so surly these rules do not apply anymore and we can do as we please. Second all other EU countries that have a ship building base don't bother with this rule and build there own...

And the cherry on the top could be 8 x NSM from the I_SSGW budget if it goes ahead As always the problem with anti-ship missiles is how do you obtain the targeting info in time to launch, travel ~100 nm at Mach 0.8-9 before the enemy ship has steamed out of the missiles limited sensor search basket...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
As said for me a good place for the B2's to end up would be a 40mm up front and the ability to add 30mm with LMM on the bridge waists as needed for me this could allow them to work in the gulf as part of a convoy under a escorts missile umbrella

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Maybe a good mix could be 57mm point A , 30mm with LMM point B , Phalanx on the hangar roof and a 30mm with LMM each side giving it
1 x 57mm
3 x 30mm with LMM
1 x Phalanx
24 x CAMM
And the cherry on the top could be 8 x NSM from the I_SSGW budget if it goes ahead

Back in the day (STRN July 19 A-140 ) the babcock model did have Phalanx's each side of the rear 40mm mount 2 x phalanx on escorts would be in line with RN thinking ( but not there budget ) i.e two on type 45 and two on type 26 however if two phalanx were to be fitted on type 31 it would make it a s...
