Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I think UK's 240V in the rain is a tad more fatal than the US 120V in the rain. A bit off topic but just a quick heads up to anyone with the tendency to grab live wires; voltage doesn't matter, it's Amps that kill. A modern car coil pack is quite capable of putting 60,000v through your hand for a n...

I expect that most of the extra weight comes from marine proofing the ship, putting padding on sharp corners and child locks on the sweet stuff etc.

Super carrier Well, to be fair they are... just. There are no strict design rules over then being big. The CVF's would have been direct competition to the Ulyanovsk carriers in the super carrier category had the latter not been cancelled. Personally I prefer the term 'strike carrier' and feel that ...

Re the visit U.S seaboard how likely that the F35b will be involved in those tests? LM and the USMC will be desperate to see it happen and get some pictures of the B at sea with an international 'partner'. Depends if the RN feel that Big Liz is worked up and crewed enough for it. Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

While more of an 'anti-boat' missile then 'anti-ship' has there been much progress with the Thales LMM that was ordered some years back? There was also some tests of the Brimstone from fixed ground positions for a possible naval role as well. Obviously these are far more suited to lighter OV's etc b...

Five Type 31s at a unit cost of £250m obviously adds up to £1250m. However, the normal learning curve would see an actual building cost profile of: £285m £257m £242m £235m £231m Further frigates would have a unit cost of £230m. The £20m difference could be reinvested in extra capabilities for any s...

Don't worry, Phalanx has a fantastic service record of successfully intercepting a friendly battleship and several friendly aircraft, it is entirely reasonable to depend on it as the sole layer of defence.james k wrote:Not much for a big, very big, asset.

Interesting stuff^^ Seems odd to me though that QE would be in dry dock so soon. I know is only the mail, but the article below suggests that HMS PoW will be 3000t heavier than HMS QE....presumably, this is as a result iof the amphib mods, whatever they are.... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/artic...

I know this may be laughed out of court but could the Army's Watchkepper drone be launched and recovered? The Army apparently has too many of them and they would provide a good reconnaissance vehicle for very little cost. Given the length of the landing and take-off strip, along with the ski-ramp a...
