Re: Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS)
Must admit, whilst the Albions would be the obvious choice to be replaced, the interesting political one would be to replace Argus and the Bays with three and leave the Albions in “rotation” (effectively reserve). That way the designs can be cheaper, there’s no downside in having to find additional...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The late 20's & early 30's seem like they could be transformative for the RN ! CAMM on the T45, NSM, more reliable hulls T26 with mk41, T31, F35 worked up with meteor & spear 3 etc - sticking plasters for the next 2 or 3 years then progress should gain pace..... Just you wait this...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
T31 "as is" is cheap because it is simple. Just it. It’s also worth remembering that for every system added the crew allocation rises. It won’t stay at 105 for long if capabilities keep getting bolted on. My main point remains that the U.K. must return to a balanced fleet because that is ...

Diamond 7 weeks Richmond takes over 6 weeks, diamond takes over. Both there both did the job. Diamond still there weeks later and another T45 is very likely to be the next replacement. There’s doing a job and taking a leading role, which is what a T45 with its ability to track threats and defend ac...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Type 45 wasn’t there for a couple of months as a type 23 relieved it and a type 45 then relieved the type 23. So both have been there They have, but the T23 was a very short term stand in only as the T45 went to get more missiles. Who saying T23 is the best answer? I'm talking in the strategic sens...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
What have we seen in the Red Sea a massive use of cheap and not so cheap drones. This doesn't appear to be an odd occurrence going forward. To have ships capable of dealing with it at non budget blowing price would seem to me to be a very strategic choice. What we have seen in the Red Sea is the va...

Just out of curiosity did you read Ryan ramsey and Tom sharpes telegraph article on hunting Russia SSNs ? It was behind a paywall, but found a way to get to it. Interesting, but nothing new - you need a multitude of top tier assets to hunt subs; frigates, MPAs, underwater sensors and SSNs - it’s a ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
This isn't the topic to discuss the Type 31. Posts deleted. Fair enough, though it was in the context of T26 numbers, and a desire from some to fill in any gap to sell to Norway with cheap T31s. I guess I will have to wait once more for someone to explain what is the priority requirement for GP fri...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
You will simply dismiss them as you don’t wish to do them and so the argument will go around in a circle. As an effort to move the debate on. Simple question for anyone that feels like answering. What could a T26 with 48x CAMM in mushrooms and 24x MK41 Strike cells do better than a T31 with 32x Mk4...

Re: Labour's likely defence policy
For defence it all boils down to the same thing regardless of which party is in power. It needs to formulate its plans and live within its means. That’s being at a min 2% of gdp because both will maintain the nato target. It will float somewhere between that and 2.5% which it has for sometime now. H...

You would need to overlook where the linage of commandos come from in 41 formed for the raids on the Norwegian and French coasts. Why start the clock in 1941? The commando raids and the invasion of Norway was all Britain could achieve at the time and Churchill wanted “action this day”. RM needs to ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Will the Norwegians really want to replace 4 (+ scrapped Helge Ingstad) GP frigates with 5 ASW? They, more than many, appreciate the Russian threat but is that enough to so radically change their approach to fleet composition? It's not as if they currently have a mix of frigate types. The cynic in ...

We will have a smaller fleet of specialists and potiential a larger group of all rounders in the middle. No sure that’s adequate. If funding remains roughly static a more balanced approach is the likely outcome IMO. - 8x T45/T83 - 8x T26 - 8x T31/T32 The cruiser idea for makes little sense for mult...
