Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

The new variant of the CR2 might turn a few heads. The smooth bore is regarded by the troops as a step back believe it or not (accuracy and range) but the new ammo options are widely regarded as nice. The RM option marries the industry leader in armour with a new bang and firecontrol: nice!!

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]

The biggest issue was the WR21 being used as load and prime mover, if they had stuck to the US turbine in that role fine but the UK engine was designed for low load rapid peak output behind the diesels as the prime movers. BAe was lazy in redesign and was already hideously behind schedule and over b...

Perhaps you should read the post again thoroughly before sledging it. Mind you I suppose being in possession of such bountiful intellect, corporate wisdom, and a gong from the empire means that you can impose your will over such tawdry things like reality or even the passage of sun, wind, and tide. ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

The party line. Not sure if that is the case given the radical downsizing of crew for QE and the T26. BMT seem to have the edge in through life logistics and design on this one. Speaking to the BMT engineering department was a revelation. I phoned up, asked a few questions and actually got answers. ...

The Kuznetsov has a list to port. I wonder if that is the concrete ballast they had to put into the port heavy fuel tanks following the water ingress into the fuel system that caused all the problems 4 years ago.

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

I don't think it is the range, rather than payload. The max all up weight for VTOL would limit the airframe to 2-4 AMRAAM /Meteor and 4 ASRAAM/AIM9X with full fuel load. If your want strike then you would need to ditch a commensurate amount of fuel for weapons. That said I agree with RS: better than...

BAe shares get to hold their price. Nice to see corporate responsibilty is alive and well. And there is criticism of holding off T26 contracts until it may work. Ron, save the electrons, I could not care less for your justification and obfuscation defending your corporate largesse. What this country...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Reviewed the Venator 110 specs on BMT. There is a stern ramp for RHIB's so it might be possible to retrofit CAPTAS -1. I know it is not a subhunter like T26 but a multistatic hull sonar and helo is better than nothing.

HF sonar is listed in the diagram and Wildcat could be fitted with Flash-2 ?!? Or is it that the BAe entry is now on the backfoot is now irking you. Given the 2050 arrays are being updated/upgraded on T23 these might find their way onto these ships(still the industry gold standard for hull mounted s...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Qinetiq did a study in 2011 in which an air group of the following could be accommodated and operated at surge. It would have been sardines but using the same software the USN uses for air ops they could model operations. I don't recall for how long or how the magazine capacity would sustain ops tho...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

My suggestion about asw potential for the type 45 was about addressing the lack of asw ships ,certainly as a carrier escort these duties would be carried out by the type 26 , but the type 45 may be called apon for other duties and having asw abilities of that level to attend where there was not a t...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

The Type 45's lack of an ASW tail has nothing to do with stern design. Their job is AAW. Can't mess around with a tail miles away from a TF and still protect the HVU's from air & missile threat. Jeesh. Kind of goes without saying! I was merely pointing out the difficulties ( many and varied as ...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

No room in the back. You would need to use a side boom for spool and recovery and that limits speed and turn rate. Also, the flow noise around the hull would interfere with accoustics and vibration on the boom might also cause trouble. If you have a tail, it needs to be at the back of the ship. Ther...

Re: Ocean Class Helicopter Carrier (LPH) (RN)

This might be the effect of the GRF being late. The number of available carrier units has dropped due to refuel and refit cycle AFAIK. The accepted wisdom of having 2 CVBG in the Gulf/Med/western Pacific is becoming more difficult to sustain even for the USN. I suspect this may be the first deployme...
