Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
and at what scale and duration will these forces operate? company scale and 72hrs... that is [an] option, but it is not one that i feel is appropriate or useful - given the cost of maintaining 3Cdo. ergo, you'd reduce the cost, and the decline from 7.500 to 5,500 would rapidly accelerate down to ~2,...

how are they deployed? how are they supplied? how are they recovered? nothing against other assets having a EMF facility, but there's a reason why USMC calculate amphibious capability in Lane Metres, as ultimately the scale of an operation is defined by how much material can be put on a beach sustai...

no room for niche fleets.
need at least 3 squadrons of 12 aircraft.
i have always understood that to require a total fleet of mid seventies.
so, buy another 25 on top of the committed 48 we've already paid for.
there. done.

I'd say the very easy answer to this conundrum is to not cancel GCAP. Then the whole hypothetical vanishes like mist.

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
For me the best thing that could be done is for BAE , Bofors and Thales to come together and design and build a new 40mm turret which houses the 40mm gun and 6 x LMM this would be a big step up if the RN made this turret the main support weapon of the patrol & escort fleet with the Rivers getti...

The Norwegians coast line is not that easy to move around and along while there is a number of small harbours transport is difficult it is easier to use the capabilities and shelter offered by the dock to host and deploy small craft. Some forget how long a coast Norway is. If you overlaid Norway on...

Question on terminology if I may: What is this "battalion battlegroup" people speak of, and how is it different from the plain-jane "battlegroup" in more common parlance? My understanding - and quite possibly my misunderstanding - is that a 'battlegroup' is a formation built arou...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
But if you are doing typically company level ops with your LRG, are having few or no LCUs really an issue? There is zero chance for example that the Argus+Bay force will ever do anything above two Coys with very limited vehicles. Still need to get the Vikings, Coyotes, Jackals and L118 ashore. Mayb...

The the old navy may have been 'shredded', but it's giving up the old singleton patrols for carrier groups, the most powerful asset on the sea. The disfunctional state of the navy can't be attributed to the Carrier's. Agreed. I take note of the recent resurgance of carrier blaming - where if only w...

pondering how damaging it would be to a war effort if an emp went off in the vicinity of your 200,000 155mm stockpile.
probably easy to bunker segregate them from an explosive strike, perhaps less so for emp?

I like it, removing the complexity associated with a well deck, which helps make MRSS be the simple truck it needs to be.... ... but adds maintenance and complexity burden to the operating cost of the landing craft. not saying it's a bad trade-off, but while i note griffyn point out the low complex...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
As I said on the future amphib thread, if the Navy don't demonstrate the value and future relevance of heavy ship-to-shore then it will simply be deleted before any comparable replacement is considered. I'm not sure there is any relevance. The RM is now a light raiding force. you are in a position ...

- We are talking about light company level operations that do not have heavy kit and are at a scale that would typically be 10% the size of 3Cdo the current force is designed for. Are we? This is the problem I have - in that I think people are making too many assumptions about the outcome of FCF.

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
Putting this in the context of MRSS it should support 4-6 helicopters and a single large fast landing craft, a much better balance of ship to shore connectors than todays fleet. Such a platform would be well equipped for 'peace time' tasks of raids and engagement around the world, as well as being ...

where does he mention this:

and is he specific about which manoeuvre capabilities are already gone?
