Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)

Think the manned turrets for warrior ect are too heavy for boxer. But they need to decide if there going all in on cta40. They have a habit or changing there mind I cant see why the Warrior turret would be too heavy for Boxer, as for the CTA40 as I understand it we have already bought enough for Aj...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)

What's the matter with just using the now redundant turret off of Warrior WCSP. Would seem to be a no brainer if they are going to fit a turret of course.

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]

It sounds drastic until you realise that 4/6 of them are undergoing routine work which has already been planned (and was the case before the CSG21 deployment). So the plan was to have 2 of only 6 Air Defence ships deployed with the CSG on the other side of the world with all the rest stuck in port ...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Day 1, the first day, el Primero. Not a very helpful reply. What I was hoping you could tell me was when ATDU first got their hands on Ajax, or one of variants/prototypes and when they first started trials to asses said vehicle. From what was said by GD all the initial work was carried out by GD, t...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

You suspect wrong. Not for the first time. The Armoured Trials and Development Unit have been embedded in the programme from day 1. What do you regard as day 1? The role of ATDU is very important, probably more now than in the past before the Government decided it was a good idea to close the Estab...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Well I have got to !5.26 my first comment would be 60000km of testing and the British Army only started trials on Ajax last year, so only a fraction of that mileage has been done by the user! This program has been running for over ten years and it appears the user, by which I mean the RAC, has only ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Not sure the RN uses a plane guard, they certainly have never had a helicopter dedicated to the task since the introduction of the Invincible's. They may have had a Merlin on standby but it would not have been worth having one airborne their was simply no need. I cant see the need on the QEs either....

No mention of it being fitted to T45, T32, F35, Tempest, or Poseidon.

Wouldn't that help its "business case"?

I know its not a 16 inch main gun but surely you don't want to be firing towards the bridge/mast/superstructure anyway. All I was doing was pointing out what I thought was obvious that elevating the gun solved the problem of traversing through a full 360 degrees. As for firing into the superstructu...

In order to traverse through 360 degrees they could simply elevate the gun above the missile silos!

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

It's not news that there are people that have been anti-AJAX within the army for years. They've never understood how we've gone from a 12t Scimitar 2 to a 38t AFV. Ironically Ajax would have been much better suited to operations as part of BOAR, while CVR(T) is better suited to expeditionary operat...

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Well at least Brimstone has a development path and so should be kept effective arming the Typhoon along with SPEAR 3. Therefore there is always the chance we could integrate it at a later date to give us the option to use either missile on the Apache Guardian and possible SPEAR 3 as well? In which ...

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

.... the upgrade is just a refresh of the current Perkins CV12 with new fuel system/injectors it can go to 1500hp but that won't increase the speed 50%. Your suggestion of a unit of measure error is probably correct. An increase to 1500hp seems entirely possible, back in 1980s a 1500hp version of t...

In several articles and statements the max speed of Challenger 3 is given as 60 mph, given that the stated max of Challenger 1 & 2 is given as 59 kph (37mph) I thought someone had made a simple error and confused mph and kph. However given it has been repeated several times by different sources ...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)

I rather jumped to the conclusion that BLOS (Beyond Line Of Sight) referred to a communication platform as it was in the C4I category, but of course BLOS could refer to many things. Another case of the MOD leaving as many questions as they answer.

I'm guessing BLOS stands for Beyond Line Of Site so using HF or satellite communications. Probably a dedicated Royal Signals platform.

Re: Apache Attack Helicopter (British Army Air Corps)

Its truly baffling that Brimstone isn't going to be fitted to Apache. It would be good to get an explanation from the MOD as to why. The only reasons I can think for not fitting it is either the US has said we cant or they want a ridiculous amount of money to do so.

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Here we can look, not at the kit per se, but how the French army is organised: bn-sized components that are not, per se, all-arms but trained to become so at a snap of fingers. Not the same thing as our BGs, which are ad hoc (though the end result, once accomplished will look much the same). You ha...

Whether or not the specific allegations are correct or not their is certainly a problem or problems with Ajax, the MOD needs to get a grip and get things sorted. Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

I assume that's a compromise being based on a mostly common hull platform. Of course all AFVs are a compromise between many competing requirements, with Ajax I think they have made the wrong choices. You only need to look at CVR(T) to see how to get a family of AFVs right. Choosing an off the shelf...

He is certainly right that situational awareness is a battle winner, however I am not convinced by his acceptance of the height of some modern AFVs. While it is understandable why IFVs are the height they are their is no good reason for Ajax to be as tall as it is.

The best MBT will be the one that provides the best situational awareness and allows that to be turned into effective action.
