Re: 105mm L118 Light gun

Russia has neither taken AFV out of fields or taken 10,000 maxims out of a forgotten warehouse. Thanks for demonstrating that you didn't even read what I said before deciding to be a complete arse. I think you also demonstrated that you have no idea what has been going on in Ukraine. Russia has bee...

Re: 105mm L118 Light gun

For the ammunition side, then any L118 specific manufacturing equipment should also be stored if/when the plant is decommissioned. it's not a stick it in a shed job. Russia seems to be producing large numbers of tanks & APCs after leaving them to rust in a field for 50 years. Ukraine also just d...

Re: 105mm L118 Light gun

Well, hopefully someone will remember the scramble for any useable weapons for Ukraine & decides to put the replaced L118s into storage, rather than scrap them. You never know when they might be needed again

Is it me, or are some contributor's once immaculate English skills suddenly deteriorating? Perhaps some have partaken of too much, or perhaps the second shift has just logged on.

Indeed - I'm thinking they should just tweak the design for known problems & to remove obsolescent components, then manufacture a "B" version

Re: General UK Defence Discussion

I'll be surprised if they all go out of service by then. Hopefully the MOD/ Treasury have learned their lesson & they start building warehouse to hold much of this equipment as a wartime reserve, because we clearly can't ramp up production as fast as we did in the 1930s Edit: Just noticed - look...

No - and likewise it wouldn't be better if only people who HAD served/worked for the MoD were on here.

On group has experience of how things really work and the other is not caught "in the silo"

Re: Archer Class Patrol & Training Vessel (PBR) (RN)

Agreed that the P2000 replacement don't need to be a single class. The 15m Officer Training variant of the SEA class would be a good replacement for the University boats, though the larger units may need more than one boat. The 18m might be even better Should we actually need to rapidly develop a cl...

I think the reason for the T32 class is pretty simple. The RN did not want to commit to a T31 B2 there and then (i.e. hand the contract to Babcock), so give itself a little wiggle room by calling it something different (for now)

That's the $64,000 question, isn't it. Movement should be considerably less on a vessel of that size.
Would a heave compensated crane improve matters? Or would it be ineffective/ too costly?

I believe that the CAMM control system shares about 70% of the PAAMS code. Presumably the core code is the same, with the differences being in the interface/ control for the different missiles

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Just a thought. I know it's extremely difficult (dangerous even) to reload a VLS at sea, due to ship movement - would the same issue occur with an inherantly more stable platform like a carrier?

And roof repairs. You wouldn't believe how many buildings in the defence estate leak. The failure to address basic stuff like that is a powerful demotivator. No-one looks forward to going to work simply because the office doesn't leak. Lots of people think "Oh God, another day in that leaky cr...

An 8x8? Would that improve load sufficiently to make LIMAWS (Gun & Rocket) a practical reality (I understand that the weight was pretty much on the chassis limit for the original proposal)?

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]

The path of least resistance would likely be to speed up the installation of NSM on T23 & T45 & increase the number installed on each ship if physically possible. Basically, "more of what we are already doing and faster". Installation seems pretty quick compared to other options as...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]

The UK and most other navies have classed ships as 1st Rate, 2nd Rate etc. to denote their capabilities, for hundreds of years. Tier 1, Tier 2 is just a modern version of that. Historically, ratings had a practical effect, as it governed whether a ship's captain could, with honour, decline battle wi...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Ōsumi-class or San Giorgio more like Both are good candidates, though the San Giorgio is possibly a tad too small, but the 3 classes span cover a range of potential dimensions and displacements - IMHO the sweet spot is somewhere in that range. My point was more about designing for/ utilising an LCA...
