It's the only article that allows for concerted action. NATO is at liberty to re-define the area that Article 6 applies to, as it did with Afghanistan

Oerlikon? I thought all the DD and FFs had been upgraded to DS30M, which uses a Bushmaster (longer ranged, as well)
Maybe time to re-think the addition of LMM specifically to handle drones

Re: Caribbean
Only applies to NATO territory north of the tropic of cancer in the Caribbean that is a line slightly north of Cuba. Do you honestly think that NATO would ignore a direct attack on the home soil of an EU/ NATO member? I know people have a hard time getting their heads around this, but the French &a...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
We already know that the first Type 31 has part of its crew and as the RN moves from type 23 to types 26 & 31 the pressure drops as both types need less crew We need to push on now and make the rest of the fleet better so replace the LPD's with one LPH with say 260 crew the RB'2 , MCM and Scott...

Re: The war in Ukraine
I disagree, one wants the enemy to be able to retreat, as without that option the enemy fights harder. Even if it doesn't result in a harder fight, then you have to deal with trapped russian soldiers and civilians. Fair point, but I suspect that it is better to allow the enemy to retreat without it...

Re: The war in Ukraine
Interesting that Ukraine seems to have adopted a strategy of prioritising landing ships as targets over e.g frigates firing cruise missiles. Makes perfect sense I suppose as chipping away at Russia's ability to logistically support its troops at the front will have more of a direct impact at the fr...

Well, it looks as if Brazil (officially unaligned, but looking to get a seat on a reformed Security Council, with a reputation as an impartial peacemaker) has closed off the only viable land route between the two countries (a road that runs through Brazilian territory), so making it clear that the s...

UPDATE - I have been contacted by someone with concerns. For the avoidance of doubt, the drone footage was obtained legally by a qualified person in adherence to UK drone legislation and guidance. In addition, the drone is insured, and a flight plan was submitted using drone safety software. Are th...

I'm pretty sure that there was a comment on that program about getting as many on board as possible for training purposes. I distinctly remember comments about them being short of space - two junior officers were on camp beds in a curtained off section of passageway

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I get inert gas for fires but how would flooding be dealt with in such a small crew in damage control situations giving that’s how the navy in peacetime have nearly lost several ships and how would they man the defence watches and air warfare battle staff with a crew of just 50? Likewise, I can see...

Except that your statement at the minute is wildly inaccurate without serious technical work and expense that isn't going to happen. Yawn. Did you notice the word "could"? Used to indicate a possibility. Clearly not. 2 Flight decks were fitted to Canberra in 48 hours. Implies that there w...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Almost any vessel with a flight deck & hangar could ferry replacement aircraft and transfer them across to the carrier using VTOL It would melt the flight deck. I was kind of assuming that they would apply relevant coatings (and strengthening, where applicable), but maybe all posts should be ac...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
They are all built from common components that is why it is called Common Anti-Air Modular Missile. Parts were drawn from ASRAAM initially and updates developed during CAMM development have fed back into ASRAAM Block 6. I knew that  Sorry - very poorly expressed. I was trying to make the poin...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
In the future, I would want to see a common ASRAAM & CAMM, maybe even CAMM-ER. One common missile. Add in much bigger production to build up big stocks and used multi-purposely, CAMM will still live with the next generation of missiles that replace aster . I suspect that the different launch re...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Does anyone know if the RN has trialled the 40mm "upgrade kit" for the DS30M? It seems that that might be an interim solution, particularly for vessels where a larger change might require an element of re-design (T45/ T26), or where life is limited (T23). Once the BAE 40mm has been adopted...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Indeed, speaking as someone who has long been of the opinion that the T26 could be a good basis for the T83 The T26 is far too an expensive platform to form the for basis of a T83 if you want to fund more than a token number. So you know what the T83 budget is? Maybe this is the point at which I no...

It’s amazing how minority opinions come to pass, time will tell. Indeed, speaking as someone who has long been of the opinion that the T26 could be a good basis for the T83 Also being of the opinion that the T31 was a good hull that could easily accomodate additional weapons system, like Mk41 VLS a...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
BAE are already doing this for the Australians. Yup! Our naval designers ARE being kept busy! The important thing is not so much that we export hulls (we are only ever going to do that in limited numbers as more and more countries develop their own shipbuilding base), it's that we retain design exp...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The issue with going this way for the T83 is you run the real risk of killing off your escort design capability and we can see this in the USN, they stuck with the AB design and when time came to replace they ended up with the like if the LCS and Zumwalt neither much good and in the end had to buy ...

Possibly more effective to put on a public display of support by moving ground troops to Guyana by air (not neccessarily British - there are other regional Commonwealth countries, like Jamaica, who could contribute). There are British forces in Belize & US Marines in a number of Central American...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The costs of building OPVs is not comparable with building credible Frigates. Some years ago I tried to figure out approximate costs for building OPVs vs frigates by looking at as many published costs as I could find My rough estimate was around £26,000 per tonne for a basic OPV and £66,000 per ton...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I think my personal idea of a balanced fleet would be more like 18 Carrier escorts 8 x AAW Destroyers 10 x ASW Frigates 6 General escorts 6 x GP frigates for higher-threat patrol areas, or general escort duties 10 Offshore Patrol 5 x larger Offshore Patrol Ships (outside reach of shore-based UK heli...
