https://www.naval-technology.com/news/type-31-frigates-could-get-mk-41-during-future-capability-insertion-periods/?cf-view What making it complex is, delivery to RN means just "start of Capability Insertion Period (CIP)". It is written so in the following part. ... on 8 February, 2024, off...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
My issue is that I do not see which of the priorities is the T31 actually addressing. The priority is not a GP ship, it’s to either to tackle sub surface threats or provide wide area / BMD defence. They were ordered to addressed the following priorities: Be Cheap. Keep our escort numbers at 19, so ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
The Initial Operating Capability for the Type 26 Class is forecast to be October 2028. All ships are expected to enter service between 2028 and 2035. Not bad. This means, HMS Glasgow will be delivered to RN on late 2026, and move into first-of-class ship trail (which normally takes 2 years). Again,...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
...https://vardmarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/VARD-7-115-NGOPV-Infographic.pdf Clearly an impressive vessel but too much capability for an RN OPV+. For me it looks very much low standard in damage control. The NGOPV in military mode requires a crew of 150. Vard 7 125 OPV requires 50, with si...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Changing the topic and moving over the "scaling" discussion from the River Class (OPV) thread, I think we need to move the conversation from a vague one about scaling and size of the RN, to something that is actually aligned to priority requirements grounded in reality. Very interesting d...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Building an additional Frigate factory in Birkenhead isn’t realistic. If it isn’t more capable OPVs to fill the gap what do you propose? If me, I shall base my plan on “using River B1s crew” here, and propose - building 3 River B1 replacement simple-simple OPVs with a crew of 25 each - up-equip the...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
… • RN would then have a compact but extremely well balanced fleet plus a clear pathway to continue enlarging if the global security landscape started to deteriorate further. By 2030 RN would have: - 6x T45 - 8x T26/T23 ASW - 5x T31 GP with 40x CAMM and 8x NSM - 5x OPV+ with Wildcat and 57mm, 2x40m...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I once thought that an OPV with 40mm 3P and Counter-UAS radar (adding Leonardo TMMR, counter-UAC AESA) can be a helpful asset to counter the drones-era. But the Red Sea Houthi's issue made me think twice. T31 with more CAMM can be more important? A gun with 3D-type radar and EO-FCS can be used for s...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Again I still think as follows: A: if we want a new built "up-armed", "100+m hull with helicopter hanger", but with OPV standard ship, it will be Spanish BAM and Dutch Holland. We know it. It is not a stupid idea. This is a ship "in-between" River B2 and T31. B: if we f...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
So on the question of core crew the Independence class LCS has a core crew of 40 And therefore, LCS never deploys with only core crew. To my understanding, LCS crew is always somewhere around 70-80, and one of the reason was to keep the ship running (just not go back to port when there is an issue)...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
S-band wave length is 7.5cm to 15 cm. What frequency ARTISAN 3D is using? Artisan is an E/F band radar 2 - 4 GHz, NATO classification, but generally known under the older IEEE nomenclature as S-band, many navies, not all e.g. SMART-L, led by USN changed from L to S-band with the SPY- 1 as the volum...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
RN needs mass and fast. Unfortunately the headcount isn’t there for 100, 150 or 200 crew in these extra vessels. The solution needs to be found whereby an OPV can carry out the security and basic HADR tasks in low threat environments without the involvement of the Frigates. Effectively a UK USGC eq...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
And OPVs shouldn't be able to contribute to a task group they're OPVs not escorts. Why are the OPVs excluded if the Amphibs and Auxiliaries are there? Adding a large amount of containerised CAMM and an additional Wildcat and flight deck could be useful. Amphibs and Auxiliaries are there to do their...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Does the same apply to the MRSS? The Enforcer or Ellida designs would be built mainly to commercial standards, what is the difference? The OPVs would operate in the same environments as the MRSS when unescorted. Of course, MRSS or Bay will retreat from the threat, not rush for. The original T31 con...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Stretch the hull to 115m, add NS50 or NS110, a 57mm and 2x 40mm, deck space for containerised CAMM, containerised Captas 1 or 2 plus a hanger for a Wildcat and it’s exactly what RN need to fill the gaps in low threat environments which may warm up in the future. Other than the size, this is pretty ...

ORC is just a large RHIB, simple, light weight and high-speed. CRC is a modified ORC.
CIC is much much large LCVP replacement. I see no overlap here?

£105mn pa running and maintenance costs for all 8 OPVs including the 5 globally deployed - extremely good value for money. https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/costs-and-locations-of-british-patrol-ship-deployments/ How can be this numbers compared with the information on 2015, as can be seen in “Revise...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The FDI is a good ship for regional navies but not as good for global navies I think But France is a global navy. Also RN was on the same side of densely equipped smallish escorts in number until Type-23. It is only after the cold war ends, and ship are to be operated for 30-35 years, and hence nee...
