Re: General UK Defence Discussion
Illuminating. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/02/28/ukraine-war-uk-aid-ben-wallace-defence-spending-nato/. Defence has to be a general election issue War is coming. If Britain is to stand a chance, we must spend 3 per cent of GDP on the Armed Forces Britain needs a robust defence strategy to d...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Classic scaremongering ahead of a money fight IMO. If it really is being discussed then PWLS replacing QE at such short notice was extremely convenient. PWLS must not be sold but trying to operate both CVFs concurrently within the current fiscal envelope isn’t smart. An unfriendly government may ju...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
…. could be plausible …. It’s more than plausible but I think Babcock have already cleared that up. IMO RN are getting a class of Frigates that are already compromised. Something that was clear from day one with the A140 design. It’s also my opinion that RN do not have the headcount or funding to o...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Seems a great deal more valuable a contribution than floating around the Pacific Rim. Visibly supporting one of our closest allies and sister nations. Not to mention a very good way to market Type 31 to the Aussies and others. P.S : Maybe they can chip in some crew if the RAN has a "looming su...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Given the low number of escorts available it’s extremely difficult to see how this could be justified.
On the other hand if a meaningful increase in funding actually transpired…..

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
RN aren't buying ASROC. Thee is nothing to say they're buying CAMM MR or ER. There is also no requirement out there stating that T31 needs to load 32x of a mixture of variant of FCASW. Priorities change. The cells should be fitted now to allow for changing priorities. Look at the difficulty in addi...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
What numbers are you not clear about?
There is absolutely no way the MNP or ASF will cost less than the T31 regardless of VLS cells. Why would T32 have half as many cells and cost so much?
The T32 isn’t anything yet.T32 is T31B2.

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Babcock also states that in order to put those 16 cells in the B position, they had to add a hull plug… I believe 2.3m or 3m, I’m not sure. As is, T31 cannot take 16 Mk41 cells in the B position. It can however take 24 CAMM mushrooms, Babcock had a model with it when it first introduced T31. Strike...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
No it isn't because the fitment of Mk41 isn't primarily for CAMM its to allow for FCASW. And B position isn't the obvious solution as you need to put the 40mm somewhere. Babcock clearly don’t agree as they put 16x Mk41 in the B position on the MNP concept. Which you get if you get close to if quad ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
I would like to re-arrange the superstructure a bit fatter and shorter. This will enable second heli-pad at the bow, and make the hangar capable of 2 Merlin (or 1 Merlin + 4-6 UAVs, or 4 Wildcats). What would be the advantage over a more traditional design such as a Vard 7 313 if a MALE STOL drone ...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Ok CAMM in ExLS in Mk41 strike length is a ridiculous extravagance but CAMM in ExLS in Mk41 tactical length is the opposite? Yes. Why fit 32x Strike cells with no additional cells primarily to house CAMM when the B position is the obvious solution. Its illogical. RN doesn't have the money to keep m...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
Bummer, I'll have to wait for the 3rd or 4th size up  How much of this is overlapping into the U.K./Dutch Amphib program and the MRSS? Also how have Damen gone from a clean sheet to a single vessel class for less than £115m? Taking the MPSS up to an Enforcer sized beam dimension of 26m or 28m ...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
…..don’t be expecting European nato to be providing any forces to help them diplomatically or otherwise anywhere else. That’s the conundrum. Pull out of Europe and the loss of influence may never be fully recovered even by a subsequent administration. Don’t pull out of Europe and not enough mass ca...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Discussion on the missile fit out is there. George knows something which we do not…. Hopefully. Multiple sources are now suggesting that 32x Strike cells will be fitted. Time will tell. If 32x Strike cells are genuinely to be fitted it’s time that 16x Tactical cells also go into B position. Fitting...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
The US has been asking European allies to spend what nato declares as needed for collective defence ie 2% of gdp. We do slightly more than that others much worse. We have massively subsidised the US both politically and militarily in its adventures these past 20 years so I’ll take no lectures from ...
