Re: Operation Shader - Iraq, Syria
The Typhoons arrived in Akrotiri, seemingly carrying Litening III so should indicate they're there for more than air-policing. They've gone low-visibility with all the markings being pulled off the tails and fuselages I see, but the "F" tail codes seem to indicate most are normally assigne...

So the vote in Parliament has gone in favour of airstrikes in Syria. There's talk of strikes starting within hours.

I remember seeing a photo taken in the 1970's over the Isle of white and indeed you could read the hands of big ben. The camera was fitted to a Canberra sadly now out of service. This one: http://i.imgur.com/ZovU177.jpg Was from from Canberra PR9 flying at 47,000ft over the IOW. Looking at the desi...

Re: USA Armed Forces
Probably not, since we're not looking for an amphibious APC.
If it floats it's probably not well armoured enough for the British Army's requirements, and the USMC's requirements are geared towards the vehicle's sea-faring capabilities - so there's a bit of a disparity in design.

The USMC's Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) competition has reached a down-select for 2 vehicles: BAE/Iveco's SuperAV SAIC/ST-Kinetics Terrex 2 General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Advanced Defense Vehicle Systems (bit of an outsider that one) are out of the running http://www.defensenews.com/story/...

Not sure what their source was but my local bbc news is reporting one at Lossiemouth and one at Coningsby (also a few people freaking out about drones) Poster on another forum who works at Coningsby said there was a meeting there today that announced they will get one of the new squadrons. So yes, ...

Cameron responded to questions from Angus Robertson from the SNP with "Scotland is getting more Typhoons, more maritime patrol aircraft and..."
So I'd assume at least one of the two Typhoon squadron is going to be at Leuchars

Re: Type 99 frigate
If it truly is going to be something smaller and not just a reconfigured GCS, I'd say their strategy is investing in designing a frigate that's more marketable to smaller foreign navies than a large frigate like Type 26 is.shark bait wrote:Agree that a new design just for 5 ships seems counter productive.

It is called Kirchnerism i think not a Peronists. Kirchnerism is/was a part of the Peronist movement - their party, the Justicialist Party was founded by Juan PerĂ³n. But yeah, Kirchnerism is a political schism of Peronism rather than encompassing the whole thing. The new president is buddy buddy wi...

Yup, they're the vehicles that the Dutch got rid of.
Originally Finland wanted to buy ATACMS missiles for them as well, but last year they decided against it for budgetary reasons.

Re: AS-90 Self-Propelled Gun (Army)
Doubtful since UK never had enough MLRS to begin with for there to be 79 vehicles to leave at MLRS standard while 50+ were converted to GMLRS. There were only 62 vehicles on the CFE report back in 2004; a year before the UK's GMLRS contract was signed. ~2006/2007 when the work was being carried out,...

Stryker is a good high value example, however it was developed for the Americans by an American company ... apart from the hull, running gear and power-train which were all built for Canada's LAV III first. I doubt it makes any meaningful difference: BAE Systems AB aren't subcontracted by Patria for the construction of the vehicles for Sweden despite of what BAE's involvement is on the S.African vehicles. Skania and SSAB (not to be confused with SAAB) are subcontracted instead. The OEM for S.African 'B...
