I would assume the T83 is likely to be more akin to capability and technology of the DDG(X) than the AB Flight III.
The only basis upon which it is would not is if the cost or crewing requirements means it is prohibitive as I feel very sure the RN will want at least 8 of these units.

Indeed - I’d argue they are compatible objectives as both are relevant to availability and therefore scope of coverage they can offer.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
12 years too late :eh: We have what we have lets more on. That said the movement to add cats and traps (or at least traps) to operate UAVs and other types of loyal wingman drones is interesting and would add a lot to the carriers. Aside from numbers of units, the key for me is getting the lethality...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
There is criticism (I don’t know how valid) in Australia on the T26 design and the issue of it being overweight - presumably top weight as it is based on the heavy radar. I think this is a good indication that the T26 design is not suitable for the T83 (assuming it is a traditional destroyer / cruis...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I think I said further up the thread - there is tactical merit in the T31 (and T32 assuming it is akin to a T31 batch 2) being relatively launch platforms for weapons systems which could influence matters over a wide radius (Tomahawk would be the example from the last 30 years). There’s obviously a ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Making a general observation (and there is some crossover between this and the missile thread) I think a key plank of what the RN should aspire to achieve (and I think is what they are working towards) is having a common VLS across the escort fleet (ie Mk 41) with a range of missiles that keep oppon...

Re: SSN(R) Future Astute Replacement (2040s) (RN) [News Only]
I’d imagine that the U.K. Submarine building industry should aim for a fairly straightforward build cycle. Over a 30-35 year period they should aim to design, build and deliver 4x SSBN and 10-12x SSN for the RN. Anything less than that would likely mean disruption on the scale we saw with Astute and...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles
I suspect what this illustrates is that the RN is much more likely to want to pursue future weapons systems fits that are based on US rather than European. This may not be apparent until the T83 but I think the points in this thread draw out many of the issues that are likely to lead to that conclus...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
There is a holistic element to all of this in terms of what roles the navy is expected to deliver and what is the fleet composition needed to deliver that. At the top end, there is carrier strike. That requires eye wateringly expensive bits of kit, and despite everything the RN has it is still short...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Thing is, the report basically recommended three things for the surface escorts (not including getting a move on with T45 PIP) which were: 1 - across the board they need an offensive missile capability (land attack and ASuW) 2 - the T45 (and by extension the T83) needs an ABM capability. 3 - we nee...

I hope so - they all look to reflect reality. Consider this comment:

Re: Type 83 Destroyer (RN) [News Only]
Isn't ABM a bit of a fantasy capability. If a nuclear war goes hot Russia have stated they will be launching hundreds of ballistic missiles with goodness knows how many warheads. We won't be intercepting them. ABM is aimed at anti ship ballistic missiles, and possibly the odd rogue launch (say from...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I agree the B2's sea going days and ability to use most ports are pluses but having to use ports to replenish can be a down side to as we saw when Clyde was turned away from Brazil True, the real value of RAS is to be able to keep a ship on station for extended periods. I would say though that is n...

Re: Type 83 Destroyer (RN) [News Only]
I could see that being the way to go, and there could be an AUKUS synergy if the Aussies feel they need a top of the line AAW destroyer.
The issue will be how to get work share and tech transfer if the U.K. go down the AEGIS route…

Re: Type 83 Destroyer (RN) [News Only]
The word "Exquisite", leaves me thinking the idea will be to make the T-83 the best AAW/ABM platform it can be, whilst building no fewer then six to avoid reducing the escort fleet. I agree - but that has to be the bare minimum, and ideal you would have at least 8 of those with the abilit...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I think without question the tempo of the drumbeat of submarine construction should increase. Constructing 11 over a c.30 - 35 year cycle is horrendously inefficient and realistically you want to see at least 14 SSBN/SSN’s constructed over that period, assuming the concepts of such remain over that ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
How big to you think the T83 will be? Govan built HMS Ocean and they built Chemical and LPG tankers when owned by Kvaerner. They were up to 236m x 32m. I’d expect the T83 to be broadly comparable with the larger American, Japanese, and South Korean destroyers which I think is well within the size o...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
There is a lot to be said about substantive commonality between the T-83 and SSNR (at least as between the U.K. and Australia) if both countries wish to have a cutting edge warship / boat in sufficient numbers (for the U.K. I would say that is at least 8 of each with ideally 10 SSNR - the deteriorat...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I agree that 6 destroyers/cruisers is too few, but I suspect 12 is likely to be a bridge too far. I’d be satisfied with 8. Realistically, to be credible top tier AAW assets from the 2030s they need to have a spectrum of capability that includes dealing with subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic SSMs, ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
All it needs now is the Sampson RADAR on top the mast :D T4X ..... I assume (and this is based on reasonably informed - for a layperson - speculation) the RN’s ambition for the T-83 at this stage requires a hull and superstructure that is considerably larger than the T-26 (or any stretch thereof).

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
If with some relatively cheap purchases or cascading equipment from retiring T23s (e.g. SeaCeptor silos, I-SSGW etc) you end up with essentially an ocean going patrol ship which could form a small part of a larger task force with QEC, T26 and eventually the T83, and you free up the aforesaid top of ...
