Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Reviewed the Venator 110 specs on BMT. There is a stern ramp for RHIB's so it might be possible to retrofit CAPTAS -1. I know it is not a subhunter like T26 but a multistatic hull sonar and helo is better than nothing. If you do a little more digging, BMT released a parallel document detailing the ...

Re: Typhoon
Thanks Gabriele. So there will be a considerable reduction in fast jet numbers. Roughly how many of those 160 will be operational at any one time? There won't be many F35bs around at that point (and even at peak their numbers will be 60 as I understand, including the training squadron, and about 24 ...

Re: Typhoon
Are we due to receive any further typhoons? According to Wikipedia (for what its worth), we have ordered some 20 or so more air frames than have been delivered. Given the decommissioning of the tornados in 2019, are we likely to make any further typhoon orders? Given that the F35b order seems to hav...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Would a HMS, ASROC (up to 8) and a merlin sized hangar (not sure what the hangar size is for the 110?) be sufficiently credible? I wonder if the T31 is seen to be too ASW capable (even though it won't be quiet), might the bean counters in the treasury push to reduce the T26 numbers and offset with ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The Venator does seem to be the most credible out of the concepts we've seen so far, but I'm not convinced it can be classed as a credible combatant without a capability against subs. Would a HMS, ASROC (up to 8) and a merlin sized hangar (not sure what the hangar size is for the 110?) be sufficien...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Is it significantly more expensive to add the 8 strike length VLS over the 24 CAMM silos? It would surely be the safer and more flexible approach to go with the strike length option since missiles/torpedos are already available. They could also take the CAMM and any land/surface attack derivatives, ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Apparently BMT are offering a strike length VLS option for the Venator 110.

I didn't notice that before, in fact, I think some of the earlier designs/concepts explicitly ruled out strike length VLS

Incase anyone hasn't seen this:
Interesting documentary, from a civilian perspective at least. Slightly over dramatised of course. Does anyone know if they made further episodes and if so, where/how to view them?

Re: Brexit - The UK's European Union Referendum
Interesting commentary.......Speaking (as an outsider again) it appears to me that the "democratic demand" for a referrendum being in a manifesto is fair enough. But what percentage of the population actually voted Tory?.... (FPTP is hardly an exemplar of Democracy) Similarly one should t...

Re: Brexit - The UK's European Union Referendum
Pseudo I think you misunderstood much of what I wrote - considering that it was a long incoherent rant its probably my fault... 1) I was not advocating a second Brexit referendum - that would be a terrible idea. I was talking about a second Scottish independence referendum 2) I was not suggesting th...

Re: Brexit - The UK's European Union Referendum
Galloglass, The referendum was clearly mandated by a democratic demand - the conservatives were elected on a manifesto pledge to hold a referendum. Further Ukip, also advocating a referendum, obtained 13% of the vote. If you combine the votes for all parties advocating a referendum it is greater tha...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I guess the cheapest and easiest (?) option would be to replace some if the Aster 15 with quad packed CAMM to free up space for Aster BMD. Would increase the total number of missiles as well as adding BMD

Re: Brexit - The UK's European Union Referendum
Looking at Brexit from the outside it appears to me that the referrendum was called primarily to prevent a "Palace Coup" within the Tory party. Something it failed miserably to achieve. It was a "brave" vote on the whole but the law of unintended consequences will produce a seco...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Thanks. I read somewhere else a poster suggesting to add CAMM to the T45, do you think it is likely to happen given budget constraints?
Likewise the replacement of the harpoon? There are two T45's without harpoon at present so this doesn't seem to be a high priority

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Could the harpoon OSD of 2018 be an opportunity for the RN to justify fitting the 12 (or 16?) Mk41 VLS on the T45's? Or is it more likely that they will be fitted with other deck/tube launched antiship missiles, or perhaps lose their ship launched ASuW capability?

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Thanks for the useful responses - put like that, it seems quite reasonable to forgo ship launched torpedos. Why then do all other peer navies, friend and foe, insist on including them on their frigates/destroyers?

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Except that without other dedicated systems for anti submarine and anti ship weapons, I guess the 24 VLS will likely have to contain ASROC and some type of antiship missile which won't leave too many silos for cruise missiles Yes, but after we subtract 8 for future SSM-s, another say 8 for ( maybe ...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
Thanks all for your comments. I was not aware that adding torpedo tubes later, if required, was (relatively) easy and inexpensive. However, given the anticipated costs I would suggest it is not unreasonable to expect to have them installed at build rather than incur additional expense adding them la...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.
the fixed tubes from the 23's could be salvaged and reused. But wonder if the CAMM's will be in dedicated launcher or quad packed in Mk41 VLS? if so could it be 36 strike length VLS or still 24 with 12 taken up with CAMM? According to the publically available material they won't be reused and there...

Re: Gibraltar
GibMariner, thanks for the comprehensive and considered response. The picture you paint is indeed another possibility, however, I am hopeful that things will be more positive. Spain will continue to cause trouble on the border and in Gibraltarian waters, perhaps even more so. But I do not believe th...
