Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

Well, reading defensenews' article on Tempest, it would seem that the programme is surprisingly well advanced even at this stage which is deeply encouraging. As for the design itself, it's extremely unconventional in comparisson to today's aircraft - certainly visually at least. One wonders how repr...

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?

Maybe taking the nuclear deterrent...out of the core MOD buudget might be a start ! People tend to rather dangerously assume that if you took the deterrent out of the budget that the money allocated to it wouldn't go with it. You'd need to be far more specific. Namely, you'd need to advocate removi...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

The engine if used daily and looked after is reliable but not when it has been sat for a while, it’s so under powered especially with all the TES kit on. Flat out across country I didn’t notice much difference between Leo, M1 or CR2, just the ride was better in CR2, you could hit bigger bumps and n...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Day dreaming time, but maybe with all the talk of a need for greater ASW capability that's taking place in political circles recently, this decision might give the government the shove in the back it needs to commit to ordering more T26s of our own! :D

In light of the current conversation: https://www.shephardmedia.com/news/imps-news/udt-2018-rn-looks-future-capability-planning-new-s/ The RN has a lot of capability coming in the future with the likes of Astute, Dreadnought and Maritime Underwater Future Capability (MUFC) ongoing concerns but the s...

Re: UK Complex Weapons Thread

Would be a good idea, especially if the CTA was fully kited out and able to fire fully programable ammo. There is already a dedicated aerial defence round within CTA's portfolio IIRC. Moreover, Thales demonstrated a CTA 40mm based SPAA system at one of the Eurosatory events not long ago - it was ca...

Surprised this has been missed, but it did come in amongst a flurry of other news. http://www.monch.com/mpg/news/land/3615-euro-curtisswright.html It would be interesting to see what they’ve done with ammunition stowage. Extremely interesting, an excellent find, Mr.fred. Under the contract, Curtiss...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

Multiple nations have tried replacing conventional tanks with platforms more focused on infantry support and ATGMS. Every single time it has resulted in a catastrophic failure of a concept. The four leading tank nations in the world right now, US, Russia, France and Germany, all attempted it and fo...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

If I might inquire: 1) what, in your ideal world, are MIV and MRV-P supposed to do? I personally see them as the ideal starting points for the development of a true "medium" weight force. I had toyed with the idea of Ajax (and MRV-P) serving as the basis for such a force, which would have...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

Objectively yes. Honestly, why? Personally, i'm no longer convinced and, for me, it is part of where we are going wrong, by subscirbing wholly to convention in an effort to match our peers like for like. My opinion isn't going to be shared by many, i admit, and could well be hugely misguided (i.e c...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

I can't really see any way in which "be able to engage a foe with vehicle-armed armoured units" would not be a core requirement for the British forces, personally, in regards to how Ajax is set to operate without Challenger support (the only anti-armour vehicle in the entire British inven...

Just keeping things focused on Ajax, the reason I feel it's an issue isn't because we're trying to "play their game" and that we think to think radical...but because there are known core requirements and capabilities that in every single military must be considered and supported. These ar...

And that's the point I contend. The effect is not to do "just as well as before", it's to do "just as well with the comparitive context of today". Other nations have upgraded without losing numbers, why should the UK upgrade and then lose numbers? To keep pace, the UK must retai...

That is not the discussion at hand, that is appeal to extremes. You don't see the difference between going "we had thousands a hundred years ago!" and the point that cutting a fleet that only ever had 6-7 planes in recent history by yet more aircraft is a straight up cut? No, i don't, not...

Saying "this thing is better than the old one, so thus we don't need as many" has been proven again and again as a false arguement. It relies on the rest of the world having not improved in the slightest either, which obviously is not the case. I don't think this is the case at all. As lo...

I think the need for munity, which is essentially what it would be if i have understood how such actions would be interpreted in law these days, first became apparent some time ago actually. If anything, it's overdue - certainly for the brass, if not even the rank and file.

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

It's been suggested by many that because of the huge negative impact to the conventional defense budget, the cost of replacing the Vanguards should be removed from the MoD's budget and placed under the Treasury. Implicit in those suggestions is that the remaining defense budget would stay at 2%. So...
