Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

The Arleigh Burke has been delivered in three flights with differing capabilities,if when the consideration for replacement of type 42 had gone this route I suggest costs may have been reduced with a more capable ship introduced for the R.N

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

I would add that if designed and built, a platform with growth that could outperform the Arleigh Burke in critical areas would be very exportable

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

How much of the costs are for the design and program development of a single unit with one main specific focus ,then double again for a unit with a different focus ,being mission specific are they less flexible in reaction and response ,consider how many years the type 45 took, to then how many the ...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

Then again the Arleigh Burke class has evolved in different flight classes and been adaptable to change Yes. And resulted in Zumwalt very high cost? Im not sure the Zumwalt resulted from any lack of ability of the A.B but more as to recover an ability of long range shore attack lost with the retire...

Re: Type 31 - Future 'Lighter' Frigate

The trials of the RV Triton were reportedly successful it was also stated there was increased survivability because of the outriggers in absorbing damage ,, there were not any disparaging remarks about the ship from the USN who were involved that Ive come across ,so perhaps a steel trimaran is more ...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

With though the soon to be deployed hypersonic missiles of mach 5-6 ,this will cut reaction times much further even fragments of a destroyed incoming missile could cause serious damage at that speed ,these missiles are likely to be deployed before the type 26 .

In 2000 the Triton a 2,236 ton tri hull was built as a technology demonstrator for the future surface combatant there were trials for the U.K MOD as well as the US dept of defense trials included the first helicopter landing and take off of a helicopter on a tri marine vessel ,this was also a trials...

Re: Should The UK Government Nationalise Port Talbot Steelworks?

I have empathy for workers losing their jobs, but if an industry is taken over by the government that is losing 2 million a day is it ok for the tax payer to foot this running cost , are there any skills shortages that these workers can be retrained in ,a meaningful retraining scheme would be cheape...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

Aviation week article stated that more aircraft workers could be laid off due to automation than globalisation ,f35 unit costs have been claimed to have steadily reduced in a different source to the point of reaching similar pricing to legacy f16 , is there a connection ?

Re: Type 31 - Future 'Lighter' Frigate

Regarding the platforms its easy to design one for low level constabulary efforts, but being able to quickly upgrade their abilities with additional weapons and sensors is harder .What types of abilities can be added quickly that are ready made that would be of use in a high end situation

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)

It might be frowned on by the bean counters but for even a modern ship designed for growth, to stay modern it needs continual improvement ,the Daring class should be expected to have upgrades to all of its abilities , The U.K is purchasing Poseidon because of a lack of ability to intercept foreign s...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN)

Agree with the sentiment , but for practical purposes giving the type 45 an extra dimension in capability should be a no brainer with limited numbers of asw ships and the doubt of the future frigates capability

The U.S.N Arleigh Burkes are to be upgraded to include a towed sonar array ,therefore increasing its asw capabilities in carrier escorting roles , should also the type 45 have a towed array instead of relying on a perhaps single type 26 , there is always the possibility a single sonar suite could br...

To keep costs down should cheaper steel be sourced from over seas ,certainly with the R.A.N putting its frigate program to international tender would something similar assist in the U.K

Re: Type 31 - Future 'Lighter' Frigate

With much of the "savings" coming from reusing already installed systems on the type 23 onto the type 26 ,why would you backflip and go to the unknown expense of a new design for the type 31, surely keeping costs down would be to use as much of the type 26 design as the base of the type 31.

Surely then with a limited number of ships to deploy you would aim that that they are all highly capable of as many different capabilities as possible.
