Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

with the use of drones airdefence now has to come back with the capability to deal effectivly with them. that will need a joint approach possibly using ESM combined with a direct attack and or some form of electronic attack. Possibly even with drones?

Re: Section infantry weapons

does the longer barrel of the conventional minimi push the range up? there are other options Minimi is available in 7.62x51 or the swede's developed a light FNMAG There are other options, but none have been taken up. Read into that what you will. the main thing I read into that is there is nothing ...

Re: westland scout

Brilliant find, I have really forgotten how flexible the Scout was and the roles it could carry out. Really shows how the Army could do will a platform to carry out the same roles rather than relying on the RAF to do everything except heavy attack and recce. Something like the Airbus H145M would be...

Re: Section infantry weapons

Ok, lets assume the three sections in a platoon, and further that in a peer conflict you will have to be prepared to deal with MBTs without much warning. One could envisage a 'universal' fire support role for CG at platoon (3) or section (1) level, but then the anti-tank capability would be very mu...

Re: Section infantry weapons

So with in mind the L110A2 with its 5.56 rounds would be effective at section level ? The L110 used the short “Para” barrel and the effective range was rumoured as being less than 300m. does the longer barrel of the conventional minimi push the range up? there are other options Minimi is available ...

Re: British Aerospace 146

PC12 is in same class as the King air and the larger king airs like the navy have are used in many airforces. But wasn't the 146 C3 got to fit in the gap of an intratheatre lift aircraft. I know the C130 has been used a few times for short haul and long haul(when thatcher went to the falklands) but ...

Re: UK Future Vertical Lift Programme

everyone focuses on moving an infantry section. However a "medium" lift helicopter would need to lift more. things like Light gun and its eventual replacement again into confined spaces. In belize when i was there we had a 4 aircraft puma flight. They tried using Lynx then got Bell 212 on ...

Re: Section infantry weapons

it would be interesting to see a modernised .280 British and how it preformed. But suspect the new round will be what ever the US Army ordanance board selects. The aim should be to get the infantry section back to a common ammunition. But a round that has more reach and better terminal ballistics.

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Depends how you look at things. You could say any purchase of a wheeled 155mm system to support the Mechanised Brigade is a replacement for the 105mm LG Yes, and then you have the units that without the (potentially underslung) LGs to support them are down to 81mm mortars as for indirect fires. - h...

Re: Gun 84mm Infantry L14a1 (CARL GUSTAV)

I see the Charlie Gee debate has started again on the Infantry weapons thread. I would contend it would be a useful support weapon for not just the Infantry but 2nd and 3rd line units for "Local Defence" the mix of natures on the new versions gives allot of flexibility.

Re: Section infantry weapons

We really should be getting some of these for our Infantry to give Sections or Platoons a bit more punch with a flexible lightweight, relatively speaking weapon system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97H7jkLm7rE It covers the latest developments for the Carl Gustav M4. Is it light enough for our H...

Re: UK Future Vertical Lift Programme

Not a bad idea going into this program. I see osprey has been mantioned, personally I think it would be a useful asset as a COD and Support Aircraft for the carriers. I'm hoping the Puma is actually replaced and not gapped to save money with something of a similar size and capability. NH90? the subj...

nope but the basic design built in a US yard with US systems at 4 times the price so the US govt can covertly provide subsadies to its ship building industry (just like it does to its aircraft builders)

As regards to blackbuck I've always wondered if we had had 2 conventional carriers live CVA1, Gibraltar class (planned but never built) or Eagle & Ark (both servicible and updated) would the argies have tried? if so how much more useful would 26 Buccaneer and 26 Phantom FG1 have been in closing...
