Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

Going to go a little off topic here, but I have always been a bit concerned with the Artisan radar when compared to the radars on board the Fremm frigates. So my question is could Artisan be upgraded to a double face system ? and would that even even be necessary. With the advent of the lighter fri...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

Ha ha. Wish I had read your post, just did the same thing. First perhaps minor point, that's not the T26 schematic. It looks more like the German F125. To get the T26, flip the gas turbine left to right and move to the location of the forward pair of diesel gensets. In turn move those gensets furthe...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

I have never understood why the CODEOG system on T26 is cheaper and low risk compared to the IEP of T45. After all isn't the T26 operating what is in effect an IEP system when at low speed, then having to disconnect that system and connect a direct drive system from the gas turbine for high speed. ...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

AJAX will not be manufactured in the UK, it will be assembled. Big difference. This is true, but... A lot of the subsystems are coming from the UK. GE IP (UK), Thales (UK), Williams F1, harness manufacturers, Kent Periscopes are all UK suppliers manufacturing in the UK. Also, if you've ever seen in...

Re: Future 'Lighter' Frigate

Good discussion, although very off-topic. Are we coming back to the light frigate? I see some pessimistic view as well as optimistic ones. It is clear that "what kind of vessel the FLF will be" is yet to be announced (by MOD?). That's why I think 2-3 classes of FLFs can be discussed here....

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Remember when we all wanted an F-35 flyover during QE's naming ceremony? We never got it, but might we get one this summer? Up to five F-35s are expected to make it over here in the summer for RIAT and Farnborough. It would be nice to have them fly over Rosyth. When is POW's naming ceremony? As lon...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

The only buddy refueling proposal for the F-35 that I have heard of, was a USMC proposal for an internal bay contained reel and drogue. The other two services had no need for buddy refueling. The idea died a long time ago. For the RN, I do hope that those proposing the idea realize that for every K...

the Carriers are great....however without escorts they are not deployable and surface escorts means Frigates and destroyers. To sustain them needs RFA's and if they are acting as pseudo frigates in the west indies or off west africa then a carrier group cannot be sustained. Doesn't matter so much i...

Re: Invincible Class Aircraft Carriers (CVS) (1980-2014) (RN)

Plan? The plan was to build one carrier, anything else was an aspiration or wish. One carrier was nominally ordered (long - lead items only at the time of cancellation). The Royal Navy's East of Suez "single stance" force structure, that the conservative government under Macmillan support...

Re: Invincible Class Aircraft Carriers (CVS) (1980-2014) (RN)

the Navy had wanted 4 but that was reduced to 2 by the MoD and then to 1 by the Treasury. Estimated cost 56 million. Speculation was that the Treasury didn't trust the 56 million price tag, hence the restriction to one. Interesting. If 3 gave the availability of 1.5, one would have given the availa...

there needs to be a clear definition of what is meant by FLF ? I suspect its a ruse to cut the frigate fleet to 8 with FLF being delayed and redefined every few years and the only thing we'll see is concept drawings. I agree. We have tried it several times here. I think the consensus is that, "...

Re: Future 'Lighter' Frigate

No, the Iver Huitfeldt class is vastly inferior to the T26. . And why is that? Also, inferior or not, Denmark has 2 Absalons and 3 Huitfelds ( as planned AFAIK ), while the RN will not get their 13 Type 26... But in the mean time, the RN has 13 Type 23's. And in the mean time, UK is about 12 x larg...

Re: Future 'Lighter' Frigate

I think your ASW list is rather a cop out. Conveniently none of them require anything of the host except a flying deck and space for a container or two. In other words can be added to FLF with no additional cost. Don't believe it. Credible ASW is rather harder than just adding a yet to be invented ...

Do you have to have bad eye sight to be in the Navy now?

Does the V-22 carry enough off loadable fuel to be a worthwhile F-35 tanker? I think not.

Re: Future 'Lighter' Frigate

But not really a deal breaker on a 70k ton carrier. Just for the reccord, I do not think we should be putting missile launchers on our carriers (other than the aircraft) So going really light on ASW for your land hugging, land attack FLF would be a big mistake IMO. LCS priority 1 module is for ASW....
