Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)

Hunt class might decommission in the space of 3 years after that point. That seems absurdly quick, considering that british shipbuilding is absurdly slow. You say that but the B2 Rivers were built in 5 years from first steel cut in Oct 14 to last hull in the water June 19 so say Babcock's were to s...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

So what would you do about it without rewinding the clock or spending money you haven't got?? For me cut the 40mm from type 31 and fit 30mm from the service pool and a Phalanx if poss also from the service pool if this can be done without cost incurred from the 40mm maybe add some CAMM to each ship...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Lets not mix words there Not able to do ASW for the Carrier group and not having a HMS are two different things Type 45 has a HMS but can't do ASW for the carrier group. Type 31 will be a capable of long periods of Forward deployment or long range singleton patrols that will be its job there by free...

So in the list of business critical models put out in April 2020 is

MHC-block 1 - support review note submission

Interesting the use of the words Block 1

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

The short answer is no however a T-31 with the engines and gen sets rafted would be a step closer and could be a so so Tier 2 ASW

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Reasonable concern, but since the RN needs an absolute minimum of 8 ASW Frigates (many say this isnt even enough), how can they cut the 5 T26? If they did, they'd need to order at least 5 more T31 that are Tier 1 ASW Frigates. Is it possible to make T31 a tier 1 ASW Frigate? If so, at what cost? Tw...

Re: Current & Future Overseas Patrol - General Discussion

If you said to we are going to reshape the RN to say 2 x carriers 1 x large deck Amphib 20 x escorts 15 x MHPC I would say get on with it but that is not going to happen, one thing you can't hire a ships commander off the self you have to train them and keep them and you can't do that without hulls ...

Re: Current & Future Overseas Patrol - General Discussion

None of this really matters. 90% of companies outsource their none core actives and not one of them worry about loosing headcount or management positions, its generally seen as a positive. Similarly there have been no negative effects on the RAF after outsourcing search and rescue. The Navy could f...

Re: Current & Future Overseas Patrol - General Discussion

Sack off the lot of it and stand up a coastguard in its place. The Navy have got more important things to focus on. I don't think it matters at all. The Navy is an organisation under immense strain, it was barely functional before the introduction of two massive carriers, and that's not going to ch...

Re: Current & Future Coastal Forces - General Discussion

First off we need to know if this is just a name change or not and if it is a real change what are the P2000's going to get in the way of armament and kit I would say if this is a real change and the boats are going to be used by the Coastal Force Squadron in the same way as the US Coastal Riverine ...

Re: Current & Future Coastal Forces - General Discussion

Aethulwulf , It all depends on your view if this is purely a UK based force or a force that is UK & Globally deployed at UK forward naval bases. I see it as the latter, and as such each of my items stand. Whilst MCM and ASW will be Common across the navy, I am focusing on both the platforms and...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Able to operate? One empty, other with half USMC jets... Well for now the first would have to operate with half and half UK and USMC and the second with all USMC jets but once we have the numbers we could ether operate both like this at the same time or one all in British carrier group and the othe...

Re: Current & Future Coastal Forces - General Discussion

Interesting as said it could be no more than a name change however with 10 years until the P2000's OSD it could be away of working up a proper coastal force for me I would like to see this force get 2 new classes maybe something like 12 Barracuda 19m boats and 12 40 meter fast patrol boats with a ra...

Re: Should the royal navy have a real hospital ship?

Of course the other way of looking at it is staff working in the NHS would after 5 years earn the right to take a 6 -9 months sabbatical from there day job to join the ships where ever they are there by doing something different and learning some new skills before returning to there day jobs with g...

Re: Archer Class Patrol & Training Vessel (PBR) (RN)

I would agree if we are going down this route ( unless it is a stop gap ) I would have liked to have seen some upgrades like engines to allow something like 35 knots and twin GAU-19 mounts would be a good start

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Even that's lala land. It'll be a huge effort getting two carriers operational, with little left over for the LPD's. May as well write them off now. I don't think so yes it will be a push to get the second LPD going but the Caimen-90 and CB-90 should pushed ahead to make the LPD /LSD's more effecti...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Yeah a HMS Ocean 2 would be brilliant, but that's lala land for at lest the next decade. If the Navy is lucky, they may get some form of LSS, but a proper helicopter assault platform is off the cards. Again I agree we would not see a LPH until 2035 and for me right now getting both LPD's going alon...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

This is fixing the problem that doesn't exist. The Royal Navy is in the midst of an escort availability crisis, and at the same time it has more aviation capacity than it has had in decades. I do agree however as I said I would still like to see a LHA / LPH allowing 2 flattops at all times 1 Strike...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

The only way the MOD can use the QEC Carriers as both LPH and Strike Carrier, having one ship in each role continuously is: BY THE ACQUISITION OF A 3rd QEC! But, in most case, only one of them is needed (Sierra Leone, Mali for LHA, Gulf war and Afgan for strike). Or, one ship can do both ...
