Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
All this talk of equipping certain Infantry Battalios with 120mm Mortars is a validation of the argument I had made a while back along similar lines including having certain units retaining the current 81mm weapon. This will also affect the future usage of the L118 1205mm Light Gun as it will most l...

Looking at post further up steam it seems the new BVS10 Vikings are replacing the aging BV206s. Such a programme has been on the cards for a while as the BS10 ias a larger and more capable platform. As there will be the latest variant of the BS10 using them in the Littoral Response Groups makes sens...

Yes, but with modern fire detection radar and UAVs finding who is shooting at you can be done far more easily and rapidly, with the latter possibly able to directly attack any guns it finds.

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
With the CTA, if the contractor has been able to use the same ammunition handling system as used in the French Turrets, we may have had fewer problems. It is a shame as it is a world class weapon even if its ammunition is rather expensive. Mind you CVR(T) crews have always been conservative with amm...

With the T-31, we do seem to have forgotten the lessons we painfully learnt in the Falklands. Many of our Warships had gaping holes in their capabilities that were known, but the speed of the deployment would have curtailed any modification to even partially rectify them. There is a danger that the ...

Re: Future Solid Support Ship
Isn't the core FREMM still there. Yes, there have been major changes to the design but wasn't it designed so that the vessel could be radically altered whilst retaining its core. Yes, the USN's Constellation is a far greater alteration than the differences between the Italian and French FREMM. It is...

Looking at the above GFE discussion, it does seem to be trying to make mountains out of mole hill. From experience I know hoe GFE can cause problems for what should be straight forward contracts, in my case an aircraft engine upgrade programme. What I find interesting is how such a contract would be...

Ok I stand corrected. It will be interesting to see how things turn out. Is there a theoretical date the first RAN SSN is due to be launched by chance?

Re: Australian Defence Force
Wanting to build the boats in Australia will kill the programme. All Australia should aim for if the final fitting out of the boats once they have been delivered, nothing more. Operating and maintaining these first SSNs may help with the manufacture of their successors, but it is asking too much to ...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
Interesting that there is no mention of the issues that caused the halting of further trials and how they may have been fixed. But it does look like Ajax will remain and enter Army service at some point. I wonder how much of a hit GDUK will have taken over this assuming the MoD stuck to the proviso ...

That is some seriously capable equipment Italy is sending. The additional PzHBz2000 155mm SPGs, M270 GMLRS, SAMP-T Battery and three Spada SAM Batteries. The overall quantities are not large but similar systems have been or are being sent from Germany, the Netherlands, France amongst others.

Re: Australian Defence Force
Whilst the selection of new C-130J-30 aircraft to replace the existing fleet, is a logical decision, was any consideration given to the A400 at all. IT would obviously involve additional costs to set up a a new support infrastructure, wouldn't the increased payload and range been of benefit to the R...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
I must admit that I strongly believe that having withdrawn most of our forces from continental Europe, we need to hold an exercise to deploy a full heavy BCT from the UK to say eastern Germany or western Poland, on short notice. The use of prepositioned heavy equipment is a must to find out if the r...

Aren't modern optical systems being augmented so that that identify possible targets through various means and then highlight which should be the priority? AS a minimum capability aren't modern systems now giving a Commander a heads up to study a location for possible targets. In these cases, doesn'...

Re: Ground Based Air Defence
Don't Starstreak and LMM use the same guidance and control unit? All one has to do is keep the cross hairs of the control unit on the target and the missile closes on its target. It should be slightly easier when using Starstreak due to its speed and therefore shorter engagement time, whereas LMM ha...

It appears to be a good piece of kit that has had many customers. I assume the person with the control unit is only involved with launch and recovery operations. I wonder of such a system could operate of a River class utilising a container for hangarage and support needs?

The MoD is well known for implementing moratoriums to cut or reduce spending at little or no advance notice to the relevant departments.

Just avoiding cuts would be a win for the MoD. The General Public have little interest is Defence caring far more for the things that actually affect their li8fe day to day such as the Health Service or Education. What is worrying is that unlike previous eras, the time it takes to re-arm and bring t...

I think the Jury is out until front line units have had the M5 for a period of time and developed a list of issues in their feedback. I am sure Sig Sauer will be more than happy to correct any issues they can, and the US Army will also expect things to go wrong with the introduction of a new service...
