Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
That's a small patch of water: a circle about 12 miles in radius for CAMM. 12 miles?? I don't think anyone seriously believes Sea Ceptor is only good for 12 miles...Janes have previously said it was good for 60km (37.5 miles). Personally, I think that's a maximum range against a simple target, but ...

What were the other options? Anything else out there, with the exception of the Japanese P-1, were glorified Coast Guard aircraft.Digger22 wrote:This whole P8 purchase is a complete and utter waste of money, and if it's just me that doesn't want anymore of the bloody things, then I'm comfortable with that.

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)
ASRAAM not becoming the standard NATO WVR missile is an interesting story. I don't think anyone will ever agree on the reasons. But the feeling within the UK was that the German's bailed for industrial reasons and the US bailed after getting AMRAAM in prime position. Ultimately I think we're lucky ...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
I've always taken a viewpoint that it's better to be close to such people. The more sway the UK holds over their imports, the better we can progress things. Agreed. You can exert more pressure when you have a relationship than if you don't (unless you're the US or China). If they go Rafale, well th...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Can't help but see this as a very deliberate move to try and weaken the UK's aerospace industry, given Germany is moving away from working on planes with them in the future. Even though I don't like it, it is a fairly principled stance (ignoring the Turkish subs contract...seems morals have limits)...

@Timmy ignoring the incorrect claim about the US welching on ASRAAM (check your history books), you completely forgot to mention helicopter borne weapons in your list. I didn't forget to mention helicopter carried munitions. See the point about Apache E. We don't know what it will be carrying yet, ...

I think it is pretty obvious the T26 is better considering 10years of advancement and a price 66% higher. I do like the FREMM. It's a good programme, delivering a very capable ship. Although the T26 will take a long, long time to be completed in comparison, the design and concept of operations actu...

The thing is how much better is FREMM over Type 23 and how much better will Type 26 be over FREMM we know type 23 is still one the top ASW platforms around. Would the US send a stores ship to RAS with QE/POW to supply weapons when their F35's are onboard ? along with a destroyer? That may be one of the options. Probably the most likely though is loading at a friendly port, as apart from the aircraft they will also need to load US personnel, spares, mai...

.. potentially to demonstrate the flexibility of the automated weapons delivery system, in the light of future co-operation? The HMWS won't matter that much. How much of each inventory will be able to be use by the other? We use ASRAAM for example, they with use AIM-9X, we have Paveway IV they have SDB, the list goes on. Just saw this on Twitter - main article behind a paywall. If there’s any substance to this, then it is hard to see how the RN would recover in terms of effectiveness & prestige. I certainly won’t relish the RN playing second fiddle to the Marine Nationale Had a read of it and it doesn't seem to...

I’m still holding out hope that cuts don’t hold with the Brexit global Britain power house message. Plus I don’t trust any reporting from the MSM. Agreed. That is true. But I bet the LM product manager for ExLS is thanking their lucky stars that MBDA and Sea Ceptor rolled into town, otherwise they'd be sitting on a massive flop at present (despite the idea being fundamentally sound).Ron5 wrote:It's by Lockheed so definitely not free to buy or maintain!!

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Why would you want to fit a ship with both CAMM and ESSM (block 2)? They are functionally the same missile. ESSM Blk.2 will have greater range than standard Sea Ceptor. Obviously CAMM-ER will be competitive with ESSM Blk.2, but the Canadian's will be running their upgraded Halifax for quite a few y...

Except ExLs doesn't fit ESSM so that will always be filled with CAMM. (in answer to calculus) ExLS at present is a pure Sea Ceptor launch system. Some graphics showing other load outs are so dated they actually include NLOS...the most recent include RAM Blk.2, Nulka and Hellfire/JAGM. But none have...
