Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

Folks, putting cost aside, why the love for the AMV? Is it because of the Bae connection?

Or is it just the money?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I guess the UK doesn't need Typhoons or F-35 either. It's not like terrorists have air forces. Let's disband the RAF.

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

Purchasing Boxer would be so stupid that it isn't even funny. Most expensive candidate; fewer variants already fielded and thus ready to be replicated; it implies lining with money the pockets of the nation that is currently your biggest enemy due to Brexit; and to add insult to injury, after the U...

Un-competed contracts are supposed to be a major no no. ... and they make up 50% of the total! The guy who was in charge of overseeing that "letter" was followed in practice resigned about half a year ago; has the post had any takers? I think that two have resigned now from that position....

T45 = £650 million each.

But zero to do with Type 31 news like 99% of this thread.

Oh yeah, a lot more expensive than AMV. The Boxer proposal ignited a major row which still flickers. Un-competed contracts are supposed to be a major no no.

Re: AW159 Wildcat Helicopter (RN & AAC)

Janes IDS in March had a long article about Wildcat in Navy service. Unfortunately I don't think it's available online. Anyhow, it sounds like a remarkable piece of kit. The radar is a big upgrade offering a 360 view with a major increase in range, clutter suppression, & detail and is forcing a ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

If it is in between 4-5 thousand tonnes it is in the right ball park, make it a modern T23 with half the crew, and extra mission space. The T23 was too small when it was built (according to the MOD sponsored YARD design review) and has remained cripplingly undersized for all its life. Why on earth ...

Sorry the quote option appears to be not working: Ron "You might be thinking that CAMM-ER would extend coverage to escorted ships. You may be correct but I'm very skeptical of such claims. Point defence systems are usually just that." I think with a range of 45km+ (probably over 60km) CAM...

A few years ago I had a chat with a former REME who used to work on Rapier. His story was that the hide bound generals didn't want a radar Rapier because that was way too hi tech and insisted on a human aimer. Took the Falklands to dispel that notion I guess.

Such is the claim. The is one very consistent & glaring fact about all missile systems since the beginning of time: they never work in service as well as the brochures/services claim. Sorry to pick on the Brits but my favorite example is Rapier. Used to attract the same level of hype as Brimston...

I already forget how many can be carried internally, after this little bit of "compression"? The integration contract calls for 4. But if they aim for AMRAAM D levels of bulk, as they should, they can later piggyback on US expansion to 6 internal. (1 on the weapon bay door and 2, rather t...
