Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
If there are 137 Typhoons that barely supports an operational fleet of 100. It’s 13 years minimum until IOC of Tempest number 1, at which time the YOUNGEST Typhoon will be 18. So all Tempest will be delivered in 5ish years? I don’t see how you can avoid a Tempest batch 4 purchase otherwise the fleet...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Id say BAE/MOD will use that gap to gut the place and rebuild it from the ground up likely consolidated on 1 yard Bae won't lift a finger or spend a penny on rebuilding facilities without a firm order. Been burnt too many times. At a guess I'd say it would be costed into the T83 program the same wa...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Their OPVs cost twice the going rate. The OPV's were provided under TOBA so this is not a fair comment. Now go look at the Astutes, Type 26, and CVF, and compare their costs to their equivalents built in the US and you'll find the UK costs are considerably lower. You could also compare T26 costs wi...

Donald let's agree to disagree. FYI other activities performed by Babcock prior to taking on T31 are : - assembly of the aircraft carriers and significant % of fabrication for them - build of 4 OPVs for the Irish navy - deep maintenance on UK nuclear submarines - support and maintenance if Canadian...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Yes. Babcock don’t have the design depth to build a front line frigate and BAE are too high cost to build an RFA or OPV, it’s not real competition.

Oh there’s also a big expansion in offshore wind planned plus eventually 21 nuclear subs that need to be dismantled. Rosyth is not going to run out of work anytime soon

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Donald, Rosyth is primarily a marine engineering support base for the North Sea oil and gas industry. Babcock leveraged some of those skills to start a frigate business. But it’s a small part of the site. To put this in perspective 20 BILLION £ are going to be spent decommissioning oil rigs over the...

A little insight from a former South Australian - Osborne is a long way from central Adelaide - about the same as Greenock to Govan The site was a mess when it was first proposed. Toxic waste of all kinds. A long term view was taken to clean it up invest in the transport links and then plan long ter...

Suggest google “sturgeon ferry contract “ Complete balls-up; doesn’t mean that a nationalisation or tight partnership to focus on one dockyard would be a failure. Where there isn’t real competition don’t try and invent it. A rail franchise model could work. Government owns the freehold and plant, P...

Yes, and work will be continuing “in the existing facilities” on blocks for both Hulls 2 and 3 !!! Do you really think that they will have room for Hull 4 and 5 Blocks to be built let alone stored , whilst they are still attempting to build and assemble the same for hulls 2 and 3. They will need th...

Any Batch 2 T26 are highly unlikely to be laid down this year! With plans for these to be built in a major new facility which has yet to be built (possibly not yet even having received planning consent), I would think it more likely to be well into 2024 or even 2025 before hull 4 and/or hull 5 coul...

A bit OTT, but I think Putin made a big mistake in taking a sectarian line, talking about the Byzantine Empire etc, obviously that is going to be a red rag to Turkey, it's pushed them back into our camp. Though if Erdogan can be phased into retirement that's fine by me, a Turkish former colleague tr...

Re: Future Solid Support Ship
Plenty of young people looking for alternatives to university debt and soulless office work. H&W will have no problem bringing in contractors from Scotland when they need them. I'm expecting H&W to use this cash injection to build up the facilities for offshore projects as well as ship buil...

True
It’s all speculation. All we know is that the Turkish defence minister was in London for talks with Wallace, and the F16 deal is facing stiff opposition in congress. And BAE are already in country on the TFX program. The rest is all parlour game speculation but it’s fun

Could I just ask and I know not right thread but at least in context as we talking about turki , question why does turkey want or interested in 3 old type 23 frigates they can surely produce their own frigates by now , Chile yes maybe but turkey? Greece has four modern German subs which could cause...

Given the ongoing Leo 2 to Ukraine debacle I sincerely hope that MGCS is dead in the water as is any clever suggestion that we should drop CR3 for Leo2. In fact I’d be astounded if in 10 years time anyone in CEE is still buying German, that new Korean / Polish production line is going to have a virt...

That sounds super conservative to my inexpert ears. How many combat platforms are not going to be made out of composites in say 20 years time? Honest question. I read somewhere AH64E is going to be getting a composite tail boom. How many times have bits been shot off a Puma and it actually has been...
