Re: New Medium Helicopter [NMH] - (RAF & AAC)

So second phase of NMH officially started today. Seems like it ... ... will be bought largely off the shelf, with UK bespoke modifications keep to an absolute minimum. ... and H145 for Cyprus and Brunei will not impact total number of new helicopters required to replace Puma https://twitter.com/Gare...

Edit: Yup, it is 7, I don't know how I completely missing the one in the middle. Some media channels are saying that 8 F-35 are embarked, I couldn't find any official statement which would confirm that or give any other number at all.

Re: General UK Defence Discussion

I'll be surprised if they all go out of service by then. Well Warrior still might be there after 2030, considering that the last of 623 Boxers are expected to be delivered only by 2032, and there is still not enough infantry version of it to equip all 5 battalions. And I would not be surprised if t...

Re: USA Armed Forces

US cancel FARA projects The reason for ending FARA, Army leaders told a small group of reporters ahead of the announcement, is a reflection of what war looks like in the modern era. “We absolutely are paying attention [to world events] and adjusting, because we could go to war tonight, this weekend,...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

Just out of sheer curiosity, if there were to be enough 'extra' F35's to justify it, which previous but currently non-active airfield is still close enough to being operational to be worth reactivating? Any of them? Maybe none of them? (Though I guess that if Trump does win a second term then the f...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

From all news I could find Spain is not going for F-35, but will stick with EFs until NGF arrive. Not sure what they are going to do with their Harriers, as realistically F-35B is the only option for replacement. Unless of course Spain decide to retire fixed wing aircraft from the Navy and go with s...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

We didn’t sail around with dozens of jets on carriers after the Falklands either Yes, but not because it was a the RN choice, isn't it, as new carriers were to small to have larger air group. But that was a minimum what they could get from government at that time, but not what they actually wanted.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

If you had 4 smaller ships each with a crew around 450 you have roughly the same as that being consumed by the 2 we currently have. 3 smaller ships maybe ... 4 no chance. Cavour has crew of 486, compared to 679 of QE class (no counting air group personal), which means difference is less than 200. S...

I'm curious about the 8x8, what configuration would it be? 2 axles front, 2 axles back... Or did they just bolt on an extra axle, on the back of the extra axle on the Coyote My guess would be latter An 8x8? Would that improve load sufficiently to make LIMAWS (Gun & Rocket) a practical reality (...

Archer is process of clearing for transport via C-17

According to Gabriel, apparently original Archer does not fit into A400, but he don't know if version mounted on MAN maybe can do it.

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Sorry Sol, maybe I did not put enough emphasis on "was" - I meant during the timeframe up to when the Warrior life-extension/improvement project was eventually decided upon. A current IFV version does indeed not exist, but it was developed from IFVs which were/are in service with Spain an...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Given that the parent vehicle is an IFV (OK, arguably TWO IFVs), was thought given to replacing Warrior with Ajax in the IFV role? Considering there is no active or announced program for new IFV, I doubt there is much serious thoughts given to any vehicle that could fill that role. And while Ajax w...

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 (Future) Main Battle Tank (British Army)

I think Abrams X was displayed with a fully hemispherical APS. Not really, it is presented with Trophy APS. Technically, T-14 Armata has vertical launching APS, together with horizontal one, but not sure if it is working (as there is no any public presentation of it) and, if it is, how effective it...

I'm afraid not. Turns out it 'might' not be the system supplied. There was a muzzle brake missing on the pic, which means it might be a Yugo built one. Still the possibility that it might be AEI was something we'd all forgotten about.. It is ex-Yugoslav Zastava M75. Probably supplied by/originate f...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)

So among 623 already ordered Boxers, 146 are APC, 200 "specialist carriers", 212 C&C and 65 ambulances. That looks like 3 battalions worth of APCs.

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)

Looks like additional order of Boxers might come soon(ish), but it would be less than number or of funded vehicles. More broadly, the UK has decided against procuring close to an additional 400 vehicles, despite allocating funding for 1,016 platforms last year. A reduced figure has since been declar...
