Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)
I agree like all MBTs it is a trade off as to where and how much armour is fitted verses weight etc.. Isn't that why the bulk of the TES package increases the protection to the sides. Mind you the CA2 has some of he thickest top turret armour as standard, able to withstand those top attack ATGW arou...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)
Relate it to the flight path of an arrow. If it flies straight and parallel to the flight path it will go into the target. If it continues on the same path buy is no longer horizontal to said flight path it will find it far harder to penetrate. That is what the Israelis discovered during their tests...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)
If I remember rightly, the effect that an APS can have on KEPs is to deflect their trajectory so that they do not hit straight on. This can have quite an effect on the performance of the penetrator, and may cause it the "Bounce" on contact.

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)
People are quoting penetration against RHA and ERA when talking about the CA2. Dorchester is neither of these and when the CA2 is fitted with TES applique armour it is still one of the best protected MBTs out there. CA2s main problem is when it wants to hit and kill the opposition and desperately ne...

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?
Nothing really new here. Everybody knows we need more resources,, but the Government will not publically admit it. Instead it puts up a wall of spin talking about new carriers and Ajax, mentions the commitment to 2% of GDP for defence and the extra 0.5% increase on top. In a nutshell, until defence ...

I would prefer the RM to order four of the ASW design with the hanger etc. enlarged to handle a Merlin and not bother with the heavy OPV variant.

So that would mean we put the CEAFAR on the T-26 and then put the Artisans on the T-31s. Sounds good to me.

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC
Hopefully one of the few positive things to come out of the on going mini-review will be progress on the MIV programme. Fingers crossed we will also see a revision of the Ajax programme to make the programme more relevant to the Army's needs.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
That is the situation in a nut shell. The Admirals and many on here hate it, but we are going to end up more like the French with a Navy of two halves, one that fights at the highest tier (Queen Elizabeth, T-35, T-26, Astute) and one that keeps an eye on our possessions and shows the flag (T-31, Riv...

The "Sacred Cow" that is the overseas aid budget need to be seriously looked at, not just to release funding for he MoD but for other departments. When the Country's finances are all rosy it is fine to sit on ones high horse and try to guilt trip other nations into spending more to help ot...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft General Discussion
Imagine two F-35s operating with four stealthy UCAVs The latter can move forward say two to detect opponents both air and ground using passive or active sensors, relay those to he F-35s which then relays targeting data to the remaining UCAVs. If the UCAVs are each carrying four to six Meteors for A2...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft General Discussion
The RAF has rarely used if at all offensive EW platforms. It has used EW platforms for training, but prefers to have EW kit either integral or podded on its other platforms. I cannot see the RAF actually operating another European fast jet after Typhoon leaves service. The Anglo/French agreement may...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
We do need the T-26, and the ASW capability it brings especially if teams up with Merlin and Poseidon. We do however need other vessels to allow the T-26 to concentrate on what we need it to do. I can understand an austere T-31 but at present the T-26 is mainly a ASW sensor platform able to defend i...

I think we need to have Corbyn elected just to see how he and his Red Guards actually deal with enacting all the things he repeatedly promises and a certain generation seem to believe he can. IF he does then I will become a convert and start carrying a little red book.

Re: Air Command to 2030
A different scenario. The Poseidons come cleared to fire all three weapons systems described but the RN only actually purchases the Mk54 with HAAWC. The crews are trained on the remaining two and will use USN stocks is we need to in a conflict we are operating together in. AS for maintenance of the ...

Re: Typhoon
I agree but the Typhoon could be going until to late 2030s early 2040s if its service life matches the Tornado and it should. Even then the Russian air force will probably still be using upgraded SU-30s and Mig 35s as will any likely opponents. The two additional Typhoon squadrons are not as importa...

Yes and everybody now seems to want to fit 5" guns to everything bigger than an FAC yet how often have these been used by the worlds navies except the UK and USA? ASM have had a moderate effect on naval warfare, the sinking of the Israeli Destroyer in the 1960 scared the life out of Naval Comma...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I agree the RN knows what it wants it just doesn't know what it needs. It was given free range regarding the T-26 and though the design is very good it is too expensive for the available budget to replace the T-23 as intended. As for a replacement ASM, well we don't need one as a priority, we haven'...

F-35B = FAA Typhoon = RAF I didn't mean not buy the F-35, but that the RAF is fixated on it as the future, where instead it should be devoting the maximum resources to getting the most out of the Typhoon. We only need the 50 odd F-35s already planned to give us the Carrier capability we need, backed...
