Re: General UK Defence Discussion
It’s alright we will throw a cocktail party next time we visit… That’s right diplomacy is the answer - sending a warship because China is investing money seems rather overdoing it don’t you think. I would have thought an economic, trade and investment plan might have been more appropriate. Fair - d...

Re: Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS)
Splitting into two batches. Presumably one to replace the Bays and the others to 'replace' the Albions plus Argus based on their OSD date? If it is six then a splitting it into two batches makes a lot of sense - partly because it keeps the door open to evolve the design as requirements change. It a...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
How easy would it be to add SMART-L to the last three T31s? Where it is situated on the Iver Huitfeldt-class looks little changed. Cost wise it looks in the £10mns per unit so with maybe a £100mn upgrade overall. No chance to add Sampson due to the top weight. I understand Sampson is lighter than S...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Diamond 7 weeks Richmond takes over 6 weeks, diamond takes over. Both there both did the job. Diamond still there weeks later and another T45 is very likely to be the next replacement. There’s doing a job and taking a leading role, which is what a T45 with its ability to track threats and defend ac...

Depressing situation and a reminder that we have a lot to do to get the 16 FFs/DDs (ignoring HMS Westminster) crewed and in better shape before we get excited about expansion.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Type 45 wasn’t there for a couple of months as a type 23 relieved it and a type 45 then relieved the type 23. So both have been there They have, but the T23 was a very short term stand in only as the T45 went to get more missiles. Who saying T23 is the best answer? I'm talking in the strategic sens...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Optimising the T31 is a totally opposite proposal to coalescing around a Tier1 escort fleet and ditching T31/T32. Different discussion. Building 10x T31 and selling the first 2 or 3 to New Zealand or a similar country is a highly probable outcome IMO. There are potential choke points and flashpoint...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
In an effort to move the discussion along a bit. I am pleased you have conceded that at least in the short term RN must make the most of the T31. That’s progress . Thanks - but be under no illusion it’s fucking stupid how we got where we are. Edit: and if anyone even indirectly suggests we buy more...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
What have we seen in the Red Sea a massive use of cheap and not so cheap drones. This doesn't appear to be an odd occurrence going forward. To have ships capable of dealing with it at non budget blowing price would seem to me to be a very strategic choice. What we have seen in the Red Sea is the va...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
When? 2045? Are you wanting build more T45? The T83 is a very long way away. There is a big opportunity now to accelerate - BAE have already said they will be looking for the next thing to build in 2 years. At the same time, as a stop gap we could pause the T31 build at hull #2, sell both and then ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Why accept this position as given? Other yards building modules, hell with support could even build complete T26s under licence. Equally T83s can be built by multiple yards. What yards could build a complete T26 under license in the UK? Babcock - Possible. In theory but would two direct competitors...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The Red Sea is a tasking for relatively cheap choke point escorts in numbers as is Hormuz etc. RN don’t have enough T45 to be wasting precious assets on flash points. They need to concentrate on the CSG. Yes there are too few AAW Destroyers, let’s solve that by buying more. Whether you like it or n...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Refusing to upgrade the T31’s with the vague hope of extra T26 is foolish IMO. Such a policy neglects to consider the practical implications of such a decision. If Norway order 5 or more T26 to be built in Govan, RN would likely see no more T26 before 2040. That’s totally unacceptable. RN would end...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
… Unfortunately, the T31's are coming. So let's find a job for them. I suggest replacing the Rivers, & the tasks the Rivers currently perform, with them and selling off the older Rivers. No more investment in the class, saving the money to spend elsewhere. I agree and it’s sad that it’s come to...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
You have to plan with the budgets / people you have not what you wish for. That statement doesn’t exactly help your argument for more unfunded T26. Fair, but firstly keeping the T31s is not free both in terms of cost and crew, equally selling them will raise funds - so it’s not all over yet. Howeve...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Just out of curiosity did you read Ryan ramsey and Tom sharpes telegraph article on hunting Russia SSNs ? It was behind a paywall, but found a way to get to it. Interesting, but nothing new - you need a multitude of top tier assets to hunt subs; frigates, MPAs, underwater sensors and SSNs - it’s a ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The current funding level is not sustainable in this security climate and fixing the headcount crisis is the top priority above all others. Therefore the money and crewing issues do not support your argument. You have to plan with the budgets / people you have not what you wish for. This is the par...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Buy the right ships for the job, don’t do it half arsed and don’t pretend buying even more of the same is an answer. Do you accept that there is no historical precedent in the Royal Navy for what you are insisting is the only way forward? That’s the spirit, a good bit of old fashioned blind dogma. ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
This isn't the topic to discuss the Type 31. Posts deleted. Fair enough, though it was in the context of T26 numbers, and a desire from some to fill in any gap to sell to Norway with cheap T31s. I guess I will have to wait once more for someone to explain what is the priority requirement for GP fri...
