Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
going forward will be more like the French carrier group they seem to send 2 escorts and then 3 allied escorts the last French group had a Type 45 and IH class attached

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
There should be some allied escorts joining too along with Fort Vic and a Tide class it really will be a sight and even though there will only be 16 jets in the airwing if anything was to kick off when at sea we can always surge more jet if needed

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
so it looks like only the LPH USS Inchon took part in the Haiti operation the remaining 9 big deck amphibs where already deployed or in overhaul at the time meaning the US had to use the carriers and army helicopters

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
interesting would like to know how far out they planned to launch the helicopter force also how many if any of the Tarawa class LHA's where also taking part in this operation. This aside it shows to me that as I have said before any puma replacement needs to be able of operating off the carriers. I ...

The £1m wasn’t just for a paint job though was it, it was for a full service and electronics upgrade which was already planned for to keep it air worthy. The media do like to spin things to get the usual out range mob going. The Aircraft was in for a D check which is the Heavy Maintenance visit whi...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
my worry about a 3rd flat top is as always it putting a QE at risk of the chopping block. We as nation we really need to get over this fear of putting thing at risk as it is an ever decreasing capability hole. we can't have the LPH we need because we might lose a carrier we can't fit out type 31 pr...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The cheapest option (whilst preserving a credible navy), would be to keep Govan building at a 18mth drumbeat for FFs and DDs with say 24yr lifespans, get Appledore (or another) up and running building sub 100m ships on a 12mth drumbeat (with 20yr lifespans) and another yard building RFAs every two ...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
I would agree in part that with the two carriers we have loads of space for RN types even RAF and AAC as well but for me we come back to the fact that we would need both carriers one in strike fit and the other in LPH and if we don't have both then we would be pushed and operational tasks would be t...

Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
just needs to be something to put 'stuff' on the back. Whether it has a covered working deck or not it will still need something like M-Cube CMS and a Radar like Scanter 4100 to operate and control UAV's and USV's. using your own words that the RAF fly the same jet as Ryianair ( P-8 and 737-800 ) a...

Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
A great birdseye view photo. It also gives you a good idea of what could fit on a platform 50% longer and 50% wider (i.e. 90m x 15m), which seem to be a popular option for suggested replacements I would say with the way USV and UUV's are going the a 90 meter ship is starting to look a bit tight for...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
I would say if you fitted a 20 x 20 meter hangar on the Albion class you could still fit 3 Merlin's in it and operate 2 Merlin's off 2 spots and just maybe if they landed side on instead of inline 2 Chinooks

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
For me keep it cheap and quick and buy 2 150 x 22 meter Makassar class LPD's from Korea for 100 million pounds fitted with a full width T hangar capable of holding 2 Merlin and 2 Wildcat opereting off 2 spots. The 150 meter Makassar should be able hold 500 people including 60 crew 300 troops and 140...

Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
By sacrificing remaining T26? = adding even more cost on T31. If the type 26's are to be cut in numbers it will have nothing to do with type 31 and everything to do with HMG what they want or don't want. China is starting its push out today Hong Kong and the world will kick up little fuss next Taiw...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
For me the answer could be keep the 3 Bays and Argus going until 2028 and then start to replace all four ship with 4 180 x 30 meter Enforcer's each with room for 400 troops a full width hangar for up to 3 helicopters a well deck for 2 Caiman 90 and davits for 2 LCVP/CB90. these would be operated by ...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships
An expensive hollow force without a clear role is not needed. If you really need to save money, at least do that decently. If you kill a capability to save pennies and gain no real personnel / budget headroom to do anything else anyway, you are shafting yourself twice in a row. I would say that 3 C...

Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
Hunt class might decommission in the space of 3 years after that point. That seems absurdly quick, considering that british shipbuilding is absurdly slow. You say that but the B2 Rivers were built in 5 years from first steel cut in Oct 14 to last hull in the water June 19 so say Babcock's were to s...
