Re: Section infantry weapons
I suspect the last GPMG gunner hasn't been born yet.
What is all the talk about SLR coming back on some platforms? given we've sold or scrapped them I would have to ask How? And are there not better better 7.62NATO semi automatic rifles out there?

Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)
Of course if we had kept our E-3Ds up to date we could have joined the European led NATO E-3 successor programme and shared to cost of what is expected to be a platform based on the latest version of the A320/321. That’s the root of all the evil. The e3 fleet has been in a hollowed out state for ye...

was there also not problems with the army needing vehicles for Afghan and Iraq at the times that was muddying the waters and a more immediate need for resources to be spent. Add in the drive to promote the Idea that "Light" was the way ahead.

Re: Obsolescent and outgunned
Doesn’t sound like a focus on light role is to blame to me. Sounds more like an organisation the doesn’t know what it’s trying to do. the Focus on light role is what has been causing the confusion leading to the organisation not knowing what it should be trying to do. Should it be investing in High...

Re: Obsolescent and outgunned
totally expected. The concentration on light role was always going to lead to this. Re focussing on high end warfighting was always going to be expensive. But still it will be the usual Jam tomorrow and more money will be wasted on bespoke solutions.

Re: Section infantry weapons
Grot MSBS... The results of the tests were staggering. According to Moszner the gun overheated, parts such as the polymer stock and lower receiver tended to break, the rifle suffered from numerous malfunctions and the gas regulator in front of the Grot simply fell out. Besides that, the gun itself ...

Re: Section infantry weapons
As there are so many CG enthusiasts here, surely anyone who gets the short straw, to carry it (and some rounds?) around would only get issued with a PDW - do we have any? If MP40 was to be relegated to a PDW role in the redesigned infantry, late WW2, then M1 carbine was originally designed as a bet...

with the use of drones airdefence now has to come back with the capability to deal effectivly with them. that will need a joint approach possibly using ESM combined with a direct attack and or some form of electronic attack. Possibly even with drones?

Brilliant find, I have really forgotten how flexible the Scout was and the roles it could carry out. Really shows how the Army could do will a platform to carry out the same roles rather than relying on the RAF to do everything except heavy attack and recce. Something like the Airbus H145M would be...

Re: Section infantry weapons
Ok, lets assume the three sections in a platoon, and further that in a peer conflict you will have to be prepared to deal with MBTs without much warning. One could envisage a 'universal' fire support role for CG at platoon (3) or section (1) level, but then the anti-tank capability would be very mu...

So with in mind the L110A2 with its 5.56 rounds would be effective at section level ? The L110 used the short “Para” barrel and the effective range was rumoured as being less than 300m. does the longer barrel of the conventional minimi push the range up? there are other options Minimi is available ...

Re: Section infantry weapons
it would be interesting to see a modernised .280 British and how it preformed. But suspect the new round will be what ever the US Army ordanance board selects. The aim should be to get the infantry section back to a common ammunition. But a round that has more reach and better terminal ballistics.
