Re: Ground Based Air Defence

With drones and the probability of swarm drone attacks shouldn't we also look at gun based systems to. Some of the lessons from Israel and Ukraine show the limitations of pure missile systems and the need for layered systems. Where it might be more cost effective to expend a couple of 30mm cannon ro...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Isn't the basic problem we re configured for the wrong type of warfare. Thinking the future would be counter insurgency in the 3rd world. With no air threat and no threat of major counter battery operations. Despite many of the older voices saying maintain credible strengths it was all dismissed. Th...

Re: Section Infantry Weapons

All absolutely correct, fun fact, it's often quoted that HK developed the numerous fixes for the L85A1, the vast majority were identified by the SASC at Warminster My favourite is the mag release guard, HK get credited with that even tho it's the same part that RSAF retrofitted back in 91 :wtf: Tho...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

the lessons from Ukraine on artillery could be far reaching. A good thing is it has brought the Army back to the need for artillery and air defence. The realisation about the over reliance on air superiority has been a long time comming. But some things we did do proved some of the concepts were goo...

Re: Section Infantry Weapons

The L85A3 has plenty of life in it, the new HK bodies (5,000 ordered at a time), plus the ongoing manufacturing of replacement bolt groups, barrel and gas parts will keep the A3 viable for many years to come. I suspect that Knights Armament will be the go to supplier, they really are excellent plat...

Re: Section Infantry Weapons

7.62 x 51 was designed to be 30 06 in a shorter case with better propellent giving it the performance of 30 06. Because thats what the US board of ordnance wanted. We wanted .280 as the theoretical Ideal projectile is around 7mm. The Americans switched to 5.56 and NATO followed now they have gone to...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

I know it's logistically Logical to extend Ajax program into AIFV, But has ASCOD had huge export success compared to it's rivals?

Doesn't that speak volumes?

I suspect the last GPMG gunner hasn't been born yet.

What is all the talk about SLR coming back on some platforms? given we've sold or scrapped them I would have to ask How? And are there not better better 7.62NATO semi automatic rifles out there?

Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)

Of course if we had kept our E-3Ds up to date we could have joined the European led NATO E-3 successor programme and shared to cost of what is expected to be a platform based on the latest version of the A320/321. That’s the root of all the evil. The e3 fleet has been in a hollowed out state for ye...

was there also not problems with the army needing vehicles for Afghan and Iraq at the times that was muddying the waters and a more immediate need for resources to be spent. Add in the drive to promote the Idea that "Light" was the way ahead.

Re: Obsolescent and outgunned

Doesn’t sound like a focus on light role is to blame to me. Sounds more like an organisation the doesn’t know what it’s trying to do. the Focus on light role is what has been causing the confusion leading to the organisation not knowing what it should be trying to do. Should it be investing in High...

Re: Obsolescent and outgunned

totally expected. The concentration on light role was always going to lead to this. Re focussing on high end warfighting was always going to be expensive. But still it will be the usual Jam tomorrow and more money will be wasted on bespoke solutions.

Grot MSBS... The results of the tests were staggering. According to Moszner the gun overheated, parts such as the polymer stock and lower receiver tended to break, the rifle suffered from numerous malfunctions and the gas regulator in front of the Grot simply fell out. Besides that, the gun itself ...

Re: Section infantry weapons

As there are so many CG enthusiasts here, surely anyone who gets the short straw, to carry it (and some rounds?) around would only get issued with a PDW - do we have any? If MP40 was to be relegated to a PDW role in the redesigned infantry, late WW2, then M1 carbine was originally designed as a bet...
