Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
I agree with Gabrielle; the do away with the contested landing (that is, contested by significant enemy ground forces near the beach) capability idea seems to be a bit of a straw man. I don´t think we have had such a capabilty since perhaps WWII. What we have had, and still have, is the ability to l...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
It seems to me the best choice would be the Venator 110, with as much equipment as would fit in the 350m budget, with the rest designed for but not with. That would seem to be present-proofed, at least. I have no idea how much equipment you would get for that price, or what the chances are of sellin...

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?
I half agree. I think, if we are going to have Strike Brigades, then rather than upgun the Challengers, we should order 100-200 direct fire variants of either Ajax or the MIV, and at least some anti-tank capability on the rest of the MIVs. If its just going to be Ajax plus basic MIV, I think it´s be...

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?
As I was trying to suggest before, we should consider what the army´s brigades are for. If they are for rapid reaction, they need to actually be able to get to the most likely (or most important) theatre (the Baltic States) very quickly, and to be able to deter/fight once they get there. If they are...

I think you´re suggesting that I´m a Russian internet propagandist, which I think may qualify you as paranoid. I don´t mind debating people, but I don´t feel comfortable debating paranoid people.

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?
My objections to your replies. 1.) irrelevant 2.) it isn´t budgeted to stay there for long, plus West Germany is nowhere near close enough. 3.) we don´t have enough money to buy many baskets. No idea what the rest refers to. 4.) the USMC are aware of this. They plan to stay ahead of the targeting cy...

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?
In the post-Brexit referendum economic climate, this review is going to be about cutting stuff. If the UK wants to remain a global player, it would make sense to cut army capabilities before air force and navy ones. I don´t think many countries are scared of one of our armoured brigades (and even if...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft General Discussion
will I agree about the lack of a need for urgency. If you look at it, the only nations that are currently pursuing a 6th gen fighter either do not have the f-35, like France and Germany (and their solution is unlikely to be much superior to the f-35) or have China to worry about (the US and Japan)....

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft General Discussion
Of course, that would rely to a large extent on the f-35 being stealthy enough not to be taken out by the LRAAMS of the other side. And having the software to control a swarm of drones, obviously.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft General Discussion
Going back to the theme, if the swarm idea turns out to be best for 6th generation combat, the f-35 might do the job if surrounded by drones. We do not have the same range requirements as the USA, so if we could get the drones to have a similar range to the f-35 that would work fairly well. The f-35...

Re: What should a balanced UK armed forces look like?
I think you have confused continuing to argue the point when you have obviously lost (find one definiton of a corps as three divisions, go on!) with understanding basic logic. They are quite different, believe me. And before you accuse me of being a hypocrite again, here are the definitions that sup...

Re: What should a balanced UK armed forces look like?
WW2: XXX CORPS was 2 Divisions + a BDE. Which is over and above 2 Divisions. No? A CORPS is a formation that the British Army cannot support at current strength. Your own examples prove you wrong, since you said that a corps is 3 divisions. The British Army could support it in a WW3-type scenario, ...

Re: What should a balanced UK armed forces look like?
Erm, if you read the thread again I think you will find that I was quite right, and that Arfah was wrong. Well whatever the case, a Corps in the British Army has traditionally been whatever the Army wants it to be at the time - two Divisions, three Divisions etc. It's not something we have ever tra...

Re: What should a balanced UK armed forces look like?
Arfah is quite right. A Corps in the British Army has never really been a particularly well defined unit of measure. From my own experience it is pretty much a term that could theoretically be applied to any formation larger consisting of at least two Divisions - the 'rule of three' not being defin...

Re: What should a balanced UK armed forces look like?
Wahay! Someone's quoted Wikipedia. I did not refer to the "Light Division" but a "light division" as in not as large as the usual strength of a division. If you check the US ´eye´ corps, you will find that they don´t even have two divisions, more like one and two thirds - unless...

we should have the ability (if it is ever needed) to eventually deploy a corps in the field, although the review didn´t mention this as a possibility A Corps is 3 Divisions. To give that a sense of scale, in the 1991 Gulf war the UK deployed 42,000 soldiers. That was classed as a "Light" ...

I wasn´t counting the Marines, but I was counting the Paras. With 3rd brigade added we should have the ability (if it is ever needed) to eventually deploy a corps in the field, although the review didn´t mention this as a possibility (I guess they don´t plan for World War 3-type scenarios much these...

Re: What should a balanced UK armed forces look like?
I think it would look like the Future 2025 force, if it ever comes about. I don´t really have any reservations about this Defence Review, it seems to have struck just the right balance, not just in terms of army/navy/air force, but also in terms of quantity/quality. For example, the Army may now onl...
