Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

Has the number of jets per squadron been set/confirmed anywhere? As far as I'm aware its still 138, but over how many years is yet to be determined. 138 per squadron?! I remember reading from someone in the Joint Lightning Force that it will be 12x a/c per frontline squadron and a smaller n...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Perhaps the worry is that the CMS needs to be exportable. I imagine there are restrictions on your top-of-the-line CMS. Don't see any reason why TACTICOS couldn't be selected by other navies in lieu of CMS-1. I do wonder if this is a conscious decision by the consortium to bring the vessel in under...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Not particularly, carrier a/c are well used to and plentiful visitors to tankers. There's nothing special in them using tankers it's been happening frequently for a long time and will no doubt continue for many years to come. Buddy buddy systems add very little to range, simply not large enough to ...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

I was trying to think of how to classify the QEs as I have difficulty calling them carriers. They may look like one but unless they are used as one they aren't. All this spin about being flexible and so on is a smoke screen. The Government has simply not been will to spend the money for them to be ...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

I think it's definitely worth looking at the recent RFTG (previously Cougar) deployments as a sign of how the QECs will be used during peacetime deployments, utilising a 'Swiss Army knife-like' air group that can respond to the widest possible range of contingencies - NEOs, disaster relief, coercion...

7000m2 is not massive, might leave room for some additional features... Agreed. It's barely bigger than Fort Victoria (6,318m3) and smaller than Fort Rosalie and Fort Austin (10,100m3). This seems odd given the much bigger air wing the QEC carriers are capable of embarking (and therefore much great...

Is there any update on the progress of HMS Audacious? How much longer until we get back up to 7 SSN? Sometime this year for Audacious, she is doing trials. Then Trenchant decoms next year and we go back down to 6. It is going to go up and down each year until 2024 when the 7th Astute is complete. S...

I suppose the documentary was made for a general audience Who the heck dI’d you think it was going to be made for? Of course it was made for a general audience and it worked really, really well. Out of interest, according to an article in Airforces Intelligence, 617 Squadron will formally 'stand up' at Beaufort AFB on 17th April 2018 and will transport 9x F-35Bs back to Marham in two waves (supported by a Voyager) during June and July.

Exciting times ahead....
