Re: The war in Ukraine
In the event that the US congress passes this $13.6bn aid bill in the next few days I don't see why Ukraine couldn't just offer to buy those Polish MiG-29's.

Re: Invasion of Taiwan
I'd think that the Kinmen and Matsu Islands would be relatively easy to pick off given their proximity to mainland China, however do they even need to bother? Given the disparity in forces wouldn't it be easier to suppress intervention from the outlying islands and mop them up once the main island ...

Re: Invasion of Taiwan
In general I support your idea, that Russia and China may not officially be allies but aware that if they both acted simultaneously, they may be able to achieve their aims more successfully. But the invasion of Taiwan would be the single largest amphibious assault ever mounted in history. We're pro...

Re: The war in Ukraine
My worry is that an invasion of Ukraine might only be the first move. I've no doubt that western powers being distracted by Ukraine would look like a great opportunity to launch an invasion of Taiwan, especially if North Korea were for the same reason to take the opportunity to make their way south.

Gardening? Pleasurable? I'm just taking a tea break from trying to halt the advance of horsetail across my property from next-doors garden - I think it's made a covert approach underneath my patio and is also pressing home it's attack on the driveway! It's been hand-to-hand around the ornamental Ja...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
It looks like the government are pulling back significantly on Tempest funding. The UK government's Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) has revealed in its annual report published on 15 July a GBP370 million (USD510 million) cut in the budget to build the Tempest Future Combat Air System. I...

Re: Future cruise/anti-ship missiles
I wonder if they are working on some sort of variable propulsion system for the missile, air breathing of coarse. It would be able to cruise a substantial distance, meeting the RN's desire for long range, or transit at a much higher velocity for anti ship work, or any combination in between. Obviou...

Re: Future cruise/anti-ship missiles
I'd have thought that the French MdCN version would make a decent platform for a long-range surface launched anti-ship missile. Not sure how stealthy it is, it abandons most of the shaping that Storm Shadow has. I didn't realise that. In that case, I'd have thought that Storm Shadow with a booster ...

Re: Future cruise/anti-ship missiles
Why is Storm Shadow (or the French Naval version) unsuitable for this requirement? Needs a re-life, but its a good question. The UK is after a long range, stealthy, subsonic missile (admittedly the French want a medium range supersonic missile for other reasons). Why not an updated Storm Shadow (it...

I'm sure there'll be a business case - Treasury will insist on it. 5 billion worth of commercial contracts were signed aboard Britannia in her last 20 years of service, it's not difficult to make the numbers work What SW1 said is of course directly relevant. Interesting analysis. I myself, think that 10 years is more likely, but on the other hand, that suits China too much, so the US will try to shorten that as much as possible. So, yes, maybe 5+ years might be the answer. I think that there's a good reason that China has increased the number of childr...
