Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
Sorry, but when in service Swingfire was class as the Army's long range ATGW, only beaten by the TOW on its Lynx AH-7. However you are correct regarding the FV438, Infantry Battalions had their Milan Section(s) which varied greatly in size over time. As I also mentioned the Spartan MCT was also intr...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
Going all in with Sea Viper as well as purchasing a number of SAMP/T batteries would meet the UK's need for both defending the country and fores deployed further afield. There has been an offical requirement for a replacement for Bloodhound since that system retired and adding an ABM capability to t...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
The LSS will not operate without an escort screen designed to be effective at whichever level of conflict is involved. This could be simply a single T-31 up to having a CSG available and both T-26 and T-45 in close. The size of the LSS is probably going to be less than many people think, which is wh...

Re: Section Infantry Weapons
"How much", is the complex equation most Militaries are now facing. We wnat individual sodiers to have many capabilities which at present are provided by equipment that weighs too much and is too bulky. Over time things will improve in both thse criteria as well as the size and number of b...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
Historically, the structure of Infantry Battalions has included the inclusion of both Mortar and Long Range ATGW Sections. For the latter Swingfire mounted on FV438s was the norm until replaced in the late 1980s by hte Spartan MCT and the addition of Milan Foring Posts to some Warriors. Today a much...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
If defence of the UK is paramount, finding money for the establishment of a viable ABM capability on land and at sea should be very near the top of the pile

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
The size of any future LSS will be based around the needs of the RM LSU and any SF embarked. We are only looking at a reinforced Company sized force, self contained on each deployed LSS. Using the existing Albions, Bays and Argus should not be seen as representing the size of ship required for the L...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
But with in the BCT's there will a Ajax equipped Cavalry and a Armoured regt with CH-3 doing those jobs [/quote] That is assuming Ajax actually enters service. On the defensive yes the Armoured Regiments Squadrons would provide fire support for the Infantry Battalions in most caseswith the Infantry ...

Remember it is an RFA not a RN warship. It only is the latter when it comes to how and where it is built and fitted out, or at least that was the revised plan.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
I cannot see any issue with having an options list of US equipment for Tempest, especially if they pay for the majority of the integration work. This may improve its export potential to customers who already use certain US systems or weapons, but the platform would also be available without any US i...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
I still think the Boxer Battalions need something like a Cavalry Squadron/Company of say 12 boxers fitted with a turret equipped with a medium Auto cannon and ATGW. This unit could provide each Battalion with both a Recce and direct fire support capabilities.

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
Whether you airlift in a c-139 or a C-17 is really irrelevant. We are not going to be airlifting medium to latge forces now or in ther future, most likely any system will be moved by see. If we expanded our inventory of GMLRS weapon systems and decided on a wheeled platform cost is going to be the k...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
Few questions. How many countries operate either South Korean MLRS compared to HIMARS? How many Countries using HIMARS have changed the truck chassis? How many Trucks with a similar chassis to that of HIMARS has the US Military bought and how many are in Europe and therefore require a supply chain? ...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
I do wonder why we are talking so much about airlifting MLRS around the place? Any large scale deployment is going to require the use of the Points to get both combat and support vehicles in theatre in the number required. What is important is how say MLRS both get to the port and from the destinati...

I am also hoping the number of CA2s ungraded to CA3 will be increased as part of a much needed revisiting of the Future Soldier programme.

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
From memory the US Barrel reduces the range by around 30%. As for range, as the guns/motars would be for direct fore support rather then aiming for rear area targets and counter battery, weight of fire and time into and out of action is probably more important. IF we went down the Brandt Rifles 120m...

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 (Future) Main Battle Tank (British Army)
I have always understood that the combination of its Power Train and Suspension have meant the CA2 is one of the better MBTs across company and one of the most stable. Unless we have to send our heavier units to the Gulf again I do not see the need for any Cavalry Charges at top speed. For Europe th...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
Neither of the South Korean MLRS are really suited to what the British Army needs Taking the K-239 it is as heavy as the M270 but is a larger platform and its cross country mobility will suffer as a result. The Army might as well simply retain the M270 as it also fits in teh A400. The reason for my ...

Re: The future form of the Army
headcount cap needs to be increased along with everything else if we want to be in the top table warfighting business. WE are still basing our readiness levels on a cycle, this needs to be either heavily modified or abandoned and more a return to the 1980s readiness levels for most units in BOAR. 3r...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
I agree to a certain extent, I was thinking about using a MAN HX chassis and transplanting the relevant items across. Cannot see a two pod fitting though. Increasing our stockpiles of munition across the board is essential, running out after about a week at warfighting consumption rates, less so wit...
