Re: RN anti-ship missiles
Given the announcement of a 2028 in-service date for the new Anglo-French antiship missile this could explain the requirement for 5 sets of the interim antiship missile, as well as the support periods. It would seem that the intention is to transfer them to the 5 T31s at their first maintenance peri...

That seems a bit low for the Burke class, is that all types of Burke? there must be a difference between Flight blocks and sensor packages. It is a function of semi-active missiles (SM2 and Sea Dart etc) which requires an illuminating radar on each target (the Burke has 3, T42 had 2) and fully acti...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I am intrigued that in the discussion of SM-2 vs. Aster & CAMM(-ER?) does not consider the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously. As I understand it an Arleigh Burke can engage 3 seperate targets at once, T45 can engage 12 and T23 can engage 32! I see this as a an area of debate that...

Re: Future Solid Support Ship
What is interesting is that the commitment to three FSSS must be linked to the commitment to have two CVF deployed. That is surely linked to the to the need to go beyond 48 F35B (which would allow 24 normally on the single deployed CVF) to 60-80 which would allow two CVFs with 24 each?

Re: RN anti-ship missiles
I may be seen as a bit radical but... 1. Make installation of 4-8 Sea Venom (surface launched) a standard fit on all RN warships (down to River B2), 2. Make installation of LMM/Martlet on all DS30 mounts (like Sea Cat was in the 1960s/70s) 3. Establish a SAG defined ship class (not T45/T26 as they a...

I see that the Brazilian navy is proposing to operate Hermes 450 UAV from ex-HMS Ocean. As the Hermes is the basis for the Watchkeeper in RA service does this show one could operate the exisiting UK Watchkeers from QE/POW? It would provide an interesting capability with ~16 hours mission time at 160...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)
There is a report (Mirror?) that the F35B order will be capped at 69. That could make sense as it could mean 4 frontline squadrons (4x12), an OCU and deep maintenance squadron of 18 and the 3 development a/c in USA? Then you have two squadrons assigned to the deployed carrier, one squadron for the c...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)
Does the 17 capable and 4 not yet capable F35Bs mean that the UK now has 21 F35B delivered by the end of the year? With 17 at Marham that would imply that in a Falklands 2.0 the carriers could credibly sail with at least 16 F35B?

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I very much doubt 32kt - I would expect about 28+? It is important to understand that drag is a square (or even cube) funtion of speed. I was on a County class in the 1970s and we could reach 27kt on steam plant only (30,000hp) and 32kt with gas turbines (30,000hp) added. So QE at 28kt on 80MW and N...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)
I have a radical view that the RN should aim for a production of 12 Dreadnought SS(B)N each with only 1 four tube missile section (the current design has 3 such sections). You would then use the majority with multiple conventional TLCMs etc in each tube and two of them operating as CASD SSBNs. That ...

Would be interesting to see the damage 3 spear cap 3 and 1 ew could do to an enemy frigate. Would the jamming be significant enough to overwhelm a ships radar? Or is this why it hasn't happened. I believe people underestimate the operational impact of a number of small warheads (30kg) accurately pl...

Will be very surprised if the start of significant sino patrols in our backyard doesn't deliver significant additions relatively early in their life. Agreed. With only 8 x Type 23 or Type 26, the N. Atlantic supply bridge CANNOT be guaranteed. One needs also to be realistic about the answer to the following question; Can the availability (in the N. Atlantic) be guaranteed, of sufficient NATO allied Naval ASW and ASuW assets to achieve the guaranteed N. ...

The other thing with the bolt-on is that it removes the optionally-manned operator seat, meaning that a hit somewhere else ...
