Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Beat me... Was just gonna post this. https://twitter.com/NavyLookout/status/1637019927038001154?s=20 Can't see why the Navy has to pay for it not being built correctly? Under English contract law if you know there is a problem with something but you accept it anyway you usually lose the right to se...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
What is noticeable in all of these articles is how little discussion there has been as to who was responsible for the defective pipework and shaft coupling. Criticising the RN for something they had no control over is perverse and like blaming the victim. Someone must know which of the Aircraft Carr...

We may only get eight but the fact that they have such good lines sort of compensates for it.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
From the latest Navy Lookout article on the Type 45s.
(The highly unusual muff coupling failure experienced by HMS Prince of Wales is a one-off mechanical issue and the QEC propulsion has otherwise proved to be both efficient and reliable).
Looking forward to seeing the photos.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The Government should consider speeding up current build programs as that would be the simplest, if not necessarily the cheapest way of improving RN capabilities and ship numbers. Of course BAE and Babcock would see this as an opportunity to make extra profit and a way of plugging the areas where th...

Embarrassing but not the end of the world, unlike the propeller damage suffered by her predecessor 81 years ago. If you have time on your hands this is a good read: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://pacificwrecks.com/ships/hms/prince_of_wales/death-of-a-battles...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Any thoughts on what the war in Ukraine means for the future use of the QNLZ class, what lessons have been learnt/relearnt and what assumptions need to change? For me perhaps: 1) The benefit of having a carrier jet that can be easily deployed elsewhere when airframe numbers are limited (F35 to Finla...

If I strain my memory, I can still vaguely remember as far back to distant past when UK F35b's landed on Queen Elizabeth!! 😁😁😁 Hopefully not TOO long before we see that again..... I was disappointed when my Corgi scale model arrived with only eight F35s on deck but now I must accept that was for ad...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Not a great photo but the arrival of Corgi's QNLZ enabled a comparison with the previous HMS Prince of Wales as both models are to the same scale.
Corgi model not bad and comes with the added bonus that F35s are fixed to the deck which is a foolproof way of avoiding engine cover related accidents.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Assuming that the covers were left in place the heads that should roll should be the ones responsible for checking that they were removed and for training the relevant crew. I wouldn't stop there. A captain gets a Court Martial if they lose their ship as they are deemed responsible for the safety of...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)
Do people really, and I mean really, think the US is going to let the lion’s share of the deal, I.e., building the actual subs, go to the UK? What reality do you people live in? Politically it’s unthinkable… You are probably right although strange things can happen where politics are involved. Who ...

I think it will come down to manufacturing capacity not design although the two are of course connected. From what I have read there is no spare capacity in the UK and the US is similarly pressed at least on the maintenance side. You derisk any technology related project by taking a tried and tested...

Does anyone know the technical issues behind the shape of a sail on a submarine? Astute and Virginia class are examples of opposite approaches. One has a more slanty front than back and the other the reverse.
