Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Let's not forget the people who actually build them. Everywhere in the UK and every business sector has a shortage of skilled workers. From pharmacies to restaurants to shipyards. The only thing we have too much of is social media bloggers. We won't build more ships or crew them without a radical re...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Will the Norwegians really want to replace 4 (+ scrapped Helge Ingstad) GP frigates with 5 ASW? They, more than many, appreciate the Russian threat but is that enough to so radically change their approach to fleet composition? It's not as if they currently have a mix of frigate types. The cynic in m...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
On the plus side. 100 crew get new mattresses, we now know the sprinkler system works and the ship is on its way to Rosyth for maintenance anyway.
NavyLookout is loyal to the RN but I think that shows up in more in what he doesn't report rather than how he reports.

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)
I have just seen a German twitter account describe F35s as F-35B-Blitzjets. Is it too late to petition the RAF/RN for a name change or is that just going to annoy the Daily Mail readers?

If only we could weaponise social media posts. Every crew member could then destroy missiles and drones with their mobiles (which would never need reloading).

Lots of valid points made but it's still an exercise and lessons will have been learnt. That's why you practice.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Whatever the best solution for drone defence experience suggests you wouldn't want to rely on just one. If you do that and when it comes to the crunch it fails (electronic kit does that at the most annoying times) you are in trouble. So you need layered defence even for ships operating on their own....

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Is there any merit in using cheap drones to destroy cheap drones? I suppose the defence drones would need a guidance system so that would up the cost but still cheaper than a traditional AAW missile. Deployed in a standard sized container onto a mission bay for extra flexibility.

Am I missing something? I thought it was rule 101 that carriers always turn into the wind to launch unless there are exceptional reasons not to.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I am sure someone here has said before that forward deployed Rivers are just for flag showing and providing humanitarian aid. Let's ignore the Falklands as that's a special case. If they are for flag showing then the ships only need enough defensive weapons to avoid embarrassment from an asymmetric ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
If this develops as everyone hopes then presumably we might see an angled flight deck added to the class as part of a major refit. That makes me slightly nervous after what happened to HMS Victorious. In that case the high costs of the refit were used to justify decommissioning the ship early.

Other points: One significant factor was that red gear was used for both engineering and security reasons. Each had a different chain of command/instruction which contributed to a the absence of effective red gear procedures. Crew exhaustion issues were not properly managed on board. Only three of t...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)
It is worth reading the report but I haven't finished yet. Findings are at 1.4.18 onwards. I got to 1.4.74. In truth this was an accident waiting to happen with lots of factors involved. It is clear UK practices around the removal of 'red gear' we're not fit for purpose and there had already been se...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
With both carriers likely to be in the North Sea at the same time the RN would be foolish to miss the opportunity for a photo of them together. To say to the critics 'Look, two working, modern, carriers'. Of course the decks might be a bit empty but it would be a start to repairing credibility.

The short bow gives it a pugnacious bulldog look compared to the sleek greyhound profile of the Type 26. More fighty.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
It is certainly going to be an interesting few years and only time will tell if the QNLZ class are sufficiently adaptable to the changing technology. We had bad luck with the armoured carriers of the 1940s which were so difficult to modernise so perhaps we are due a break. The direction of travel do...

Just speculating: Last week's news reports on Babcock wanting more money maybe part of this. Could there be an arrangement where Rosyth is guaranteed the upgrade work to keep them in the black? I think that's exactly what will happen. For the customer there is only one thing worse than a duopoly an...
