Re: The 2024 UK General Election

I have lived through many UK elections and governments. The government that has just been annihilated was by far the most unprincipled and incompetent in my lifetime. I rejoice in its destruction and the rejection of the party from which it stemmed. Let's see if this lot are people with more integri...

Re: MBDA Storm Shadow Missile (RAF)

Given the successful performance of Storm Shadow/Scalp in Ukraine, why are they not put back into production? If 'the West' wants Ukraine to be able to push Russian assets further back from the Ukraine border into Russia, long range strike assets are needed. Ukraine has US long range strike assets b...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

To the best of knowledge Dassault has shown zero interest in supporting localised production of Rafale, let alone IP transfer. Even something as basic as language would be an obstacle. Plus the best fighter in the world is not much use if it's not there when the conflict starts. https://theprint.in...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

Hopefully the indians won't shoot themselves in the foot again - like Rafael - & hopefully get a tiffy line going .... but not to hopeful for them, personally i would "gift" them our T1's if we are going to retire them anyway as an incentive ! Excellent idea to offer India the RAF T1'...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

I would be extremely surprised if the Eurofighter makes a sale in India, not least because the Germans are in charge of the deal & we know they are not very good at this. That the Indian Navy was also mentioned as wanting to acquire some of the jets suggests they need a carrier capable craft, a...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

The Indian MRFA programme to make 4G fighters in India is warming up. According to notoriously unreliable Indian media, Eurofighter is pitching with a substantial drop in price (30% mentioned). Dassault has a big, big backlog of orders for Rafale, so perhaps availability gives Typhoon a chance?

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

The 10 year equipment plan is around 280 billion, of which around 12bn is directly Tempest/GCAP. Less than Armoured vehicles, digital, and only slightly higher than helicopters. 12bn sounds like a bargain for UK share of project costs to 2033 if this this covers all Tempest development including se...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

As an addition to my post above, I noted in reading the parliamentary report that there was a funding problem identified in the 2023-2033 equipment plan. I do not recall any other poster other than myself talking about improving performance ie getting more bangs per buck (thus reducing funding probl...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

I'm very confident that no new countries will be joining GCAP as a development partner. There's no need and no time. This would suggest otherwise: https://www.shephardmedia.com/news/air-warfare/uk-gcap-programme-can-only-survive-if-more-funds-are-allocated-expert-warns/ What was it I heard recently...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

So, neither India nor Saudi Arabia would be suitable partners. I have no idea what funding would be required to develop, test and certify Tempest, but it sounds to me like the general sentiment is that GCAP goes ahead with a question mark concerning the adequacy of funding. Additionally that It shou...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

If it looks like there may be insufficient development funding for the programme to achieve its goals, does it not make sense to fully investigate the possibilities of getting another country to join the programme? It looks to me like there are two possible candidates - Saudi Arabia and India. It w...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

I completely agree that in an ideal world the incoming Labour government would have cancelled the MRA4 and went with something else, though realistically I get the impression that the true scale of the problems didn't become apparent until the early 2000's. Though it really shouldn't have gotten to...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

So what happens to the new technologies being developed when it comes to assessing what to incorporate in Tempest if it goes ahead? Are some abandoned as being unaffordable? Are some shelved, to be developed when funds allow? Are some downgraded to make then affordable? What one wants to avoid is sp...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

Iam not au fait with any demonstrator schedule. Is a demonstrator likely to be revealed publicly in the next year or so? I'm sure the GCAP partners have a nervous eye on the UK's imminent General election, Labour are resisting any increase in defence spending, their " when conditions allow&quo...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

According to what I see on a Turkish forum, the word on the streets in Istanbul is that there is still interest in Eurofighter. Is anything happening on that front? Perhaps it is too late to avoid production being interrupted at Warton (=increased cost) even if an order is placed.

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

I read elsewhere that 12 of the Qatari order for 24 were delivered October 2022 - October 2023. Presumably work on frame 24 has already started. If a KSA order were given this year, when could the first aircraft be delivered after a break in assembly? On the Turkish front, while US senator oppositio...
