Re: CRV(T) Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Yes it is a nice video. On the other side it is also disheartening to see that units need to came up with improvisations like those racks to carry NLAW outside turret so that commander, while exposing himself, could reach and use if needed. And its replacement, Ajax, is not addressing this in any wa...

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

In the same timescales you could expect to develop a whole new design. MGCS is in developing for almost a decade and still not a single prototype is produced. Would it be cheaper to just install teh turret form the latest Leopard 2 A7V. Would it be? Leo 2 does have larger turret basket, and neither...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

An Armoured Regiments at one stage had both integral Recce (Scorpion) and ATGWs (FV438/Swingfire). Today they still have the former but will lose them when the Scimitars are retired as there appear to be no plans to have Recce Troops in Armoured Regiments when ajax enters service. Yes but under new...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

IMO having more vehicles to support infantry is never a bad idea, and MGS is not exactly replacement for a "real" tank. Number of countries have similar systems, either tracked or wheeled, like Italy (Centauro 2), Japan (Type 16), Russia (Sprut-SD) ... even USA, although retiring Stryker M...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

There is already a version of ASCOD equipped with Leonardo's HITFACT turret with 120mm. Ajax probably could be equipped with the same turret. Or any other turret like Cockerill 3105. I think that Cockerill also has(?) turret that could carry 120mm gun, XC-8, but if I am not wrong this is older gener...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

I'm not convinced you'd want CT40 as a point defence system. It's not an unreliable system, but you want exceptionally reliable if it's your weapon of last resort. Well Thales and Nexter are developing a naval CIWS system RAPIDFire which will use CT40. Apparently it could also be used by ground for...

You never know if the MoD gets a real liking to wheeled AFVs the Royal Marines may end up with s few of the new 8x8 Amphibious Assault vehicles being built for the USMC, to compliment the much lighter platforms like Polaris. Unlikely but strange things sometimes do happen. Why would Royal Marines e...

If I remember correctly, the Gun System maintains a path for the driver to exit to rear. It is! But supposedly the crew is Driver/Operator and Commander. No idea where Commander is stationed. Rear exit is for Commander who sits behind driver in extended crew cabin. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E2uzw...

I’d also be interested to know what ruled CV90 out, particularly with the interest in it from this and other forums. According to informed sources, the AJAX was regarded as not fit for purpose, and the BAE Systems-Hagglunds CV90 was assessed as too expensive. From https://www.australiandefence.com....

Why would it? ASCOD 2 is not exactly the same as Ajax, and it have completely different turret, provided by Elbit.

Finland developed the Patria 8x8 and 6x6 so is happy to go all wheels for APCs. For APC, yes, for IFV no. Finnish Army still has over 200 CV9030 and BMP-2M and they are not getting rid of them. All BMP-2M were modernised recently and for CV9030, Finland already sign contract with BAe for modernisat...

The Bundeswehr which of course has both Boxer and Puma and operates both with its leopard 2 tanks without any difficulty. In fact the command ve...

Yes many countries are buying tracked IFVs these days and some are also buying wheeled ones such a Poland, who have actually bought their wheeled IFV, the Rosomak and are now developing a tracked IFV the Borsuk. Sure, lot of countries is buying wheeled IFVs but very few are pairing them with tanks....

Considering that Hungary deal with Rheinmetall for 218 Lynx IFVs and 9 Buffalo armored recovery vehicles, will cost around $2.4 billion (£1.7 billion ?), it is hard to believe that 245 CV90 would cost "just" £700 million. Norway upgraded 103 CV90 and bought 41 new chassis for £500 million ...

The only three NATO countries with substantial current orders for tracked AFVs are Germany and Poland and the United Kingdom.
