Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Haven't the South Africans developed an extended range 105mm Gun? Yes, Denel's G7 105mm with 52 caliber barrel, and weight of 3.8 tons (there are some proposals which could reduce weight to 2.5 tons). Issue is that development is still not finished due lack of funding, but Denel is still looking fo...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Ok just when I did some very quick digging I found somewhere it said empty weight of a HX60 was 7 tons so was thinking if the gun and mount could be kept to 2 tons it could be a starter but if not OK but a HX60 with this gun and mount could still be a good SP option for the Light infantry and Light...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

The hawkeye L118 system on a HX60 should work for the Light Infantry BCT , Light Mechanised BCT and AA BCT if it can be kept at around 9 tons and within the lift capability of a Chinook Unladen weight of MAN HX60 is 9.2 tons. There is no chance to put a gun on it, with all the ammo and other equipm...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

when it comes to the Light mechanised BCTs dose it need to be air transported by Chinook? I guess not really, but having a same system on different platforms does not sound as a good idea to me. Same guns system on the same platform for both Infantry & AA BCT, and 3rd Commando would simplify tr...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

not seen the video but have seen the coyote 105mm before but did not know it was a L118 now for me this is the SP gun for the Light mechanised BCT's It is a Mandus Hawkeye system, with L118 gun barrel. IMO some solution based on Hawkeye cold be solution for L118 gun replacement, but there is one bi...

Re: M270 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)

Presumably if it went the full 100% increase from that tweet they'd be assuming 6 regular batteries? So two full regular 3 battery regiments (Starting from the 40 (ish) number) Well currently 26th Regiment RA has 3 batteries for total of 27 systems. If they just fully covert 3rd Regiment RHA to MRL...

Re: M270 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)

If British Army wants to keep 9 systems per battery, for 6 (4 regular + 2 TA), that would require at least 54 units. So probably some 60+ in total should suffice.

Re: M777 Portee DVD 2016

Ahem... Well if Pinzgauer can tow M777, and carry ammo and 8 memebers of crew that is great. But I never saw any photo that suggest that it could, or find any text reference. Which does not mean that I can't, of course. Btw, Supecat ATMP could tow M777, al least on the road https://i.ytimg.com/vi/A...

Re: M777 Portee DVD 2016

Vehicles currently tasked with towing the 105mm Light Gun could also tow the M777, ... I doubt that Pinzgauer could tow an artillery peace almost twice its weight, and crew and ammo on top of it. Especially outside roads. Any vehicle that US is using for towing M777 is usually 6x6 and over 10 tons,...

Re: M777 Portee DVD 2016

The French use these at Brigade level with 155mm held at divisional. That is not true. French artillery regiments at brigade level use combination of 155mm guns, 120mm mortals and Martel missiles, usually one battery of each. At divisional level they, 1st Division is having MLRS regiment, while 3rd...

Re: M777 Portee DVD 2016

The Guns are roughly the same weight and yes the formers ammunition is far heavier but you can get away with using less and still achieving a greater result at a greater range. They are not roughly the same weight. M777 is more than twice heavier. Not to mention that it would require bigger and str...

There will be 2 regiments from 2024, till then 3rd Regiment RHA will still operate AS-90 and 26th Regiment RA will be the only MLRS regiment with 3 batteries of 9. Going by the number of M270 being updated ...

Re: M270 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)

If that's the case the opportunity to get 9 lightly used M270 could be there for the UK. Still that would mean UK would buy those launchers, not just getting them from Norway. They could easily buy US M270A0 and modernise it to M270A2 standard or directly buy completely new M270A2. Thing is there i...

Re: M270 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)

Any change of more from Norway to replace them? The only reason why Norway gave UK 3 M270 is that they wanted to donate them to Ukraine, but as theirs were not modernised and so can't fire GMLRS, they sent them to UK while UK gave Ukraine three of their own. This time UK is directly donating theirs...

Re: M270 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)

Seems like Britain will send three more M270 to Ukraine. This would mean that only 38 will left for the Army, including 3 old Norway MLRS.
